Noel-Simmons Speaks On Delayed Merger

May 13, 2011

Former UBP candidate Devrae Noel-Simmons spoke out today [May 13] about the now-delayed UBP/BDA merger.

He said the voters should not panic, there will be teething pains in every process, but their intentions are to best serve the voters. Mr Noel Simmons said he isn’t against the merger itself, and in fact he feels it’s a good idea as a divided Opposition is not ideal.

On May 3, the UBP voted to to dissolve the UBP, and merge with the Bermuda Democratic Alliance [BDA] to form a new party. The UBP was formed in 1964, while BDA was formed in 2009 after members of the UBP split to form a new group.

Mr Noel Simmons was one of the UBP members who filed an injunction on May 10th to stop the UBP from dissolving. He was joined by UBP leader Kim Swan, MP Charles Swan, former MP Erwin Adderly, ex-Senator Charlie Marshall, Robert Lewis, Ola Gabisi, Patience Godfrey, Austin Woods and party joint chairman Montell Currin.

Now why would we panic? We will simply vote PLP anyway!

    • Rockfish#1 says:

Call me old fashioned, biased, out of touch etc, but I find it difficult to take him seriously with that hairstyle.

      • Billee The Kidd says:

Rockfish#1 you are old fashioned, biased and out of touch – Let’s get past the cover of the book and check the content

        • Rockfish#1 says:

I read the book/s some time ago. One would think he would attempt to improve his image, and not maintain it by looking like the neighbourhood clown.
Whenever his name is mentioned, his appearance is the talking point, not his message.

          • Devrae says:

@ Rockfish, Thats why people like you will always be ‘Stuck’ mate! That will always hangup about anything! My image reputation is the red hair…but I gues you feel that because I’m different…that must really burn you to know that I’m there but yet you can’t listen to my words.

            • Cleancut says:

YES! i agree with you Mr.Simmons. you also have to remember that you are presently campaigning for public office in Bermuda. Unless you are trying to reach a segment of the population for extra votes, i really think you should portray the contemporary office look. once in office then you can style up like a kim wilson with Burch earings and a turban if you so wish.

        • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

If I’m looking for a book on politics and come across one which reads “Exotic Florescent Orange Birds Gone Wild” I’m probably not ever gonna get to the book’s political content you dig Billee The Kidd?

      • 1 says:

I don’t think anyone takes this guy seriously….

        • Black Soil says:

That’s why the injunction is in. These guys supporting the injunction know that they will not be given favourable work within the new party. This injunction is about protecting their own interests, and nothing about the best interests of the people.

      • Rich says:

I think there are more important reasons not to take him seriously than his hair.

    • @ Watching…so then let’s continue the Saga….Vote PLP!!! Are u serious…u actually believe that the PLP is going to pull u and I out of this mess! So you believe that we are all ok and this ‘thing’ we are going through is just a phase! U call yourself ‘Watching’…I say what r u watching? Because whatever fantasy world your living in u need to step into reality…

      • Watching! says:

You obviously did not understand the meaning behind my words and are reading way too much into it. Do you honestly think that YOU or your party will get us out? Just because the tough gets going does not mean you throw in the towel. The PLP could have folded a long time ago but stayed tough and eventually formed the Government. The UBP lose a couple of elections and decide to fold.

Your feeble attempt at humor is as sad as your pathetic haircut. So far I have not seen or heard anything out of your mouth that resembles a solution. Your trying to play, “the brother from the hood” angle a bit too hard.

But hey, I admire your spirit

  2. Shut Yo Mouth... says:

If it talks like a Trojan Horse ,an looks ( emphasis on looks ) like a Trojan Horse than guess what people…Yep you got it , it’s a confused Trojan donkhorse

  3. Truth says:

Everyone doesn’t have to agree. That is the point of a democracy. Majority rules. You guys had a vote AND THE MAJORITY agreed to disband and join the BDA. Thats it !! It seems to me that you have no real reason to hold up this process. The voters are not stupid. We can fully follow what transpired without you holding up the political progress in Bemuda. I have a theory that only those people who would have no role in the new combined party are holding this process up…..but that is just a theory.

  4. B, a Lady says:

Hair suits him to a “T”, Mr. T! Call me cynical, old- fashioned or whatever, but when you present yourself in a way that is off- the- grid, such as this man, you have to expect your listeners to be distracted. They may come around if you are saying something intelligent or important, but if not, they just stay glued to whatever ridiculous feature you created. I want my politicians to have the maturity to not create spectacles of themselves.

  5. Keeping it real says:

ok cool. So the UBP failed over the last decade..Then the BDA is created, why would they take the same old fashioned, disillusioned people from the already failed UBP party? If you felt a new party would present better competition then you shouldn’t have bought them over in the first place..

PLP will win again anyway :) Because if we let the 40 thieves back in, they will push the black people into a hole, like they did before

    • Keeping it unreal says:

Wait didn’t the PLP put the whole country in a financial hole? LOL

Seriously, so this guy really needs to get his appearance together right? Because politics in Bermuda is all about what someone looks like and if they look like you.

It is such a terrible thing that they might want to take a little more time and make sure proper procedure/protocols or whatever are followed instead of just doing whatever they feel like or giving contracts to whoever they feel like, regardless of due process…

    • BdaPapa says:

How are black people any better off now then they were under the UBP??? Come on! This is why the PLP will win because you know nothing of politics or fiscal accountability and will vote only by skin color. The PLP politicians have robbed this country blind and not for the benefit of the brothers or sisters but for themselves.
“Keeping it real” you are classic sheeple.

    • PEPPER says:

What kind of hole are you in now with the PLP in charge ?

  6. stop the BS says:

Keeping it real, If the UBP (forty thieves) pushed black people in a hole, you keep drinking the koolaid,1998 we had 160 million dollars in debt and a 50 million dollar surplus on the current account. Today under the PLP (who you seem to suggest have done such a great job in comparison)who have got Bermuda into 1.25 billion in debt that belongs to all of us i find it scary that you think that the UBP pushed black people in a hole! Now who is keeping it real?

    • Face the Nation says:

Former Premier DREB had it figured out; to pocket 100 million $$$ you would have to spend about one billion plus $$$ . Exit the stage in a hurry and sit incognito in the pavillion and watch The Hat And The Combined Opposition duke it out.

  7. Terry says:

Best “hole” you or your parents ever been in. Now dig yourself outta this one. what a crock of shit.

  8. Lana talbot says:

    Specialgirl

I think they may have to re-think the party name, as the word “ONE” does not seem to work for them ! They are still divided and a house that is so often falls eventually !!!

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

Just like Paula and her silly hats & over the top preciseness in speach, Noel with the Mr T hairstyle can’t be taken seriously. I do not want either of them representing Bermuda at a high level international gathering. Playing in the little Caribbean pond with the rest of the nobodys is fine.

The problem is, even if his message is good, the appearance is what will be remembered.

Yeah, I sure would hate to go back to the bad old ways of the UBP. Remember, back when Bermuda was respected as one of the most successful micro countrys of the world? Remember when Bermuda wrote the book for all others to follow for successful tourism? Remember when Bermuda did not have much of a debt worth speaking of? Remember when people were not getting shot every other day? Remember when…?

No, I would sure hate to go back to those days having a responsible, but not perfect, Government.

The ‘NEW’ Bermuda of the past 12 years is soooo much better than a Government with the philosophies of the BDA/UBP, now the OBA.

    • Terry says:

Whats de matter Ace. Sum buddy stole yah raid car?

  10. Spooky says:

Funny that you mentioned the 40 thieves. They have not gone anywhere. See all the offspring’s in the OBA……oops I mean the BDA…….oops again, UBP! Sorry, I’m so confused these days! The UBP has not gone anywhere at all.
As for the 40 thieves, they are just in disguise.

    • Linda Mello says:

40 thieves? What time zone are you living in? Front Street has changed and I would expect that most of the 40 thieves are pushing up daisies, unless you’re talking about the ones on the hill.

  11. Terry says:

@ Spooky…..take off your tinted visor dood………….Show me a Trimingham , Smith, Gibbons et al. They lost their business due to mismanagement. AS Coopers is still there…….

Your confusing the “40 thieves” with the PLP MP’s. Past is past and the Colonial thieves have left. All we have now are confused negro’s that swallow the bait. Certain Senator said it right but they incorporated themselves.

Now back to regular programing and happy 21st May….End of the world yah no………um havin konk stoo ann fish cakes on dee 20th…….vat yoo lutt hawin…..

    • Terry says:

Oh thats right…..it’s Saturday……your not at your desks….damn…….

    • B, a Lady says:

You are drinking kool aid. The Trimingham’s , Smiths and Gibbons are still going strong. The loss of a business did not affect their bank balance. They were salting it away in trusts for years. They are still living a great life, unlike us who are out there bickering and carrying on like idiots. If we had any sense, we’d tear a page out of their books – work, save, build, save, live.

  12. White Jesus says:

Forget tinted visors. Ban this guy’s hairstyle Loogin liga peacock!

  13. Terry says:

White Jesus, your forgiven as we are pinned here on the cross. My Father forgives you and one day you will live with me in paradise.

You fools put to much on perceived. Your all bloody fools. You worry about a hair cut. Closed cropped hair means nothing more than you like it that way or you have gone though Cancer treatment or your old and loosing your folicles.

As for “peacock”…the irony in that means your pissing and you can’t find the source……..Swing low sweet BMW…..

    • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

Reminds me of that TV commercial where the guy has a stain on his shirt during an interview. Every time he talks the stain speaks over his voice lol. That’s what his hair is doing.
Oh and sorry I hit a nerve there Terry! I swear I had no prior knowledge of your being unblessed in that department. Nonetheless I will try to empathize rather than laugh at your misfortune. (cough)

  14. Jim Bean says:

Ask him the real reason for doing this – harold darrell – corey butterfield snd a couple others want the ubp to live on…..aks them point blank

  15. Nifto deCoco says:

Is it fair to presume that the vast majority of the people who vote the PLO are of black bermudian decent and are all working for government whilst the producers in the international business community affiliate with the UBP? Expat in peace.

  16. mary says:

What we all need to do is stop this black / white racism thing all the time we need to get along with each other. Need to focus on whats going on around us like the violence and the people we are losing on a monthly basic. Let’s all get along. We are all suffering from the government cut backs. But does not seem they cut there salaries back.

  17. Just an idea says:

Love is all bermuda needs everyone is built with howit feels butbifyou dont feel it ..?…….

  18. Devrae Noel-Simmons says:

So basically ALL these comments that I have read today are not based on the message being passed to you but my hair? So despite the fact that No one has stepped up to the plate to try and at least make a change and I have means nothing! Well guess what peeps I’m here to stay So you all need to get used to it and the hair! Because I’m not going to look and be a ‘Commoner’! No I will be me, Devrae Noel-Simmons! And I will crack on speaking about and representing all that believe that WE need to get Bermuda on track! Also, those that speak about the 40thieves…guess what they all left the building awhile ago that’s why we are suffering now…but I guess as common folk you accept your living conditions as is, like sheep only to be lead to the slaughter house…

    • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

Sorry what’s that you say? I couldn’t hear you over the loud florescent orange sound your hair was making!

      • Rockfish#1 says:

Sounds like another version of ” I cannot hear what you are saying because what you ARE is deafening me”

      • Rob says:

And I thought there was only one Col. Burch on the island. OMG there are two peeps. I don’t care what you think.

    • Sarah says:

so you don’t count yourself among the common folk? you certainly have a way with your people…

  19. d reader says:

non candidate + a non party = sheer non sence speach

  20. Devrae Noel-Simmons says:

@ White Jesus, and what’s wrong w a peaxock? Its one od the most Glamorous birds alive…larger than life! Doesn’t matter anyway…all the pro athletes and people of influence are starting to have Mohawks so u need to get used to it! The message is what’s important…democracy!!! This is what I represent and will continue to do so…love me or not you cannot allow my words to go unheeded or unheard…

    • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

Is this the speech you tell yourself in the mirror before public appearances?
      I’m glamorous
They’ll see me as larger than life
All de pro athletes and people of influence are starting to wear Mohawks
Ya so what I’m none of those but I’ll be commended for bravery, a real trend setter.
Hate it or love I am who I am, get over it haters!
      Im glamorous
      The message is what’s important
      Im glamorous!

      • Rockfish#1 says:

You missed you calling in life. Maybe Devrae will hire you as his speechwriter.

        • Rockfish#1 says:

          typo—-”your calling” Still laughing–sorry!

  21. Oh and further more…I challenge any of YOU… To an open public forum in a town hall meeting…maybe when we are in font of each other we will see who makes the most sense or are you the types that just do a lot of barking with no BITE….

    • Rockfish#1 says:

      Devrae,
I assume you are serious about entering politics! If you are, your arrogance and combative attitude must be replaced with a large dose of humility. So far your only contribution is to stimulate conversation about a hairstyle which is a needless distraction, you are NOT an athlete NOR a person of influence, so stop kidding yourself! People should be talking about your intelligence and vision etc. Therefore throwing out challenges like a prizefighter makes you look weak and defensive. Surely your party apparatus can arrange a town meeting for you if they think you are worthy of it!

      • Terry says:

Sounds like a ‘Newt’ that needs to be a ‘grinch’…..jingus….talk about tyme ann plaice……….

      • Actually Rockfish its not arrogance its confidence and high selfesteem that allows me to speak the way I do…because I listen to all varieties of politicians and activist it all comes down to the same thing…who has the courage to stand up despite the odds and the and the retoric from my peers! Not that I think you know politicians because I don’t believe you do…but I am All athlete and presently play on the Bermuda National Rugby team and have represented Bermuda in various other sports locally n internationally! Which again shows that you actually have NO knowledge of Bermuda’s sports figures who have pioneered different sports to uphold Bermuda’s name! But if your nonathletic, then of coure YOU would consider my personality combative and arrogant! Plus I haven’t met a successful business person who didn’t have a STRONG personality that’s what makes Success… So if my Hair is Your disraction then you will simply miss whatever oppotunities come your way because you r so Easily distracted…I guess this is the brain child of the government at present…

        • Rockfish#1 says:

Actually I know much more about you than you think ( Be careful) Do not make reckless assumptions. I am fully aware of and am a member of the sporting fraternity in Bermuda, and have witnessed your efforts at posing as a trainer and consultant. What project are you working on now? What local sports awards have you won?? I could go on but you get the point!
Hell, I even remember the pink and white hair.
PEOPLE WANT TO BE REPRESENTED BY AN INTELLIGENT AND MODEST PERSON, NOT AN EGOTISTICAL ONE WHO IS FULL OF IT.

          • Rockfish#1 says:

            @Bernews,
I understand why you edited the above comment. However, Devrae as an aspiring politician must be prepared for a very bumpy ride, he is quite happy to dish it out, but must learn to deal with the consequences.

          • PEPPER says:

Kim Swan is his pal.what does that say about our opposition leader ?

            • Rockfish#1 says:

A drowning man will cling to a straw. Anon.

        • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

Be careful with that argument! If a teacher pulls out his pet peacock and starts stroking him in front of the class he cant blame the students for being distracted from lessons. That’s like peacocking on our heads and telling us “its just rain don’t let it distract you.”

        • Watching! says:

What makes you think you are a politician? I am reading your comments and they are all defensive to say the least. You are not a role model, you do not speak well and you want to challenge someone to a debate! I will challenge you but first you must get to the second round of the TV Show, are you Smarter than a 5th Grader”.

If you do succeed, I will let my 13 year old daughter debate with you and only if you get past her, I will waste my time humiliating you in public.

        • PEPPER says:

Devrae, why would you want that rediculous hair so style ?? you look like a complete idiot… who in hell would consider anything you have to say…. grow up man…

    • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

I may not bite, and maybe you won’t either, but that exotic animal on your head just might!
As you were talking of biting, scenes of Jurassic Park and being chased by a giant devraesaurus flooded my poor heart.

      • Face the Nation says:

Lol…Can’t stop …having a blast .Must rent JP to see him run for MP ..

        • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHA omg my ribs are aching lol

      • Rockfish#1 says:

        Hilarious!!

        • White Christ aka White Jesus says:

Somebody needs to teach Mr. Foghorn Leghorn the difference between STRONG personality and strong CHARACTER!!! Because I think he’s confusing one with the other. We don’t need representatives with STRONG personality. Osama Bin Laden had strong personality. We need leaders with strong CHARACTER sir! And that means leaders who aren’t trying to compensate for their low self-esteem by adopting defensive-exclusion to state one’s uniqueness as opposed to the others. It screams “I need attention and a breast to feed me”!

  22. Bermy 1 says:

AS FOR ME I wont be voting for UBP, PLP, BDA, OBA or any other Alphabet names because they all are got it wrong. What this island “REALLY” needs to do is to put aside this party nonsence , come together with some TRUSTWORTHY HONEST people that truly have BERMUDA at heart and all of us work togetherto save ourselves from a sinking ship. But i guess as Bermudians we will wait till we are well underwater before we realise we are sinking.

  23. Sarah says:

So Mr. Simmons intends to impress us all with his imposing character.

  24. B, a Lady says:

My son was pestering me for a Mohawk haircut, but after all this, he stopped pestering me. Young people are SO intelligent. They should run for seats in the house.

Mr. Simmons, your 15 minutes, thankfully, has run out. Please exit the stage, and try to leave with some dignity and grace. You owe that much to your family and friends.
