November 12, 2011

[Updated] The 2011 NACRA Men’s and Women’s Sevens is taking place in Bridgetown, Barbados today [Nov.12] and tomorrow, with 27 teams from across the Caribbean, Central America and USA taking part.

Playing today in torrential rain, Bermuda and USA South both entered the last game with a 0-2 record, with both teams losing to Mexico and Cayman Islands. Bermuda walked away with a 17-7 win over the USA South team.

USA South were first out the traps, scoring under the posts for a 7-0 lead. However Bermuda hit back before half time with veteran scrum half and captain Tom Healy running a try in the corner from fully 80 meters. Ian Henderson was unsuccessful with the difficult conversion attempt. Half time 7-5 to USA South.

The second half saw a determined Bermuda take control. A penalty on the opposition 22 meter line saw Healy and Henderson link up, with Henderson slipping a sublime grubber kick behind the rushing defense for Healy to scoop up one handed and cross for the score.

Late on, Bermuda applied pressure to the USA scrum 5 meters out, and with the wet conditions, a guddle by the opposition half backs allowed Henry Paddison to touch down for the easy score. Henderson added the extras from a difficult angle for a final score of 17-7.

Prior to winning their third game, Bermuda lost their opening game to Mexico this morning by a score of 7-5. Bermuda’s solitary try was scored by Ian Henderson. In Bermuda’s second game, in even worse weather conditions, the team lost to the Cayman Islands 17-0. Tomorrow sees Bermuda enter the Bowl competition.
