January 25, 2012

Bermuda nursing student Kiara Baxter, recently selected, to represent England at the upcoming Under-21 World Netball Championships, is featured in the online edition of Britain’s “Nursing Times” magazine today [Jan. 25]

Bermuda Hospitals Board scholarship winner Ms Baxter, 20, moved to the UK last year to study, has been named in England’s national indoor squad that will compete in Australia in June.

She is a member of the first team at Leicester’s De Montfort University where she is in the first year of her nursing degree.

Ms Baxter told “The Nursing Times”: “It’s a great honour to be chosen for the team and I am really excited. I’ve always loved sports, in particular netball.

“I became serious about nursing a couple of years ago when my niece became sick with a serious case of eczema and I took a role in her care and treatment.”

Angela North-Rose, head of De Montfort’s school of nursing and midwifery, said: “We are absolutely delighted for Kiara, it is a real testament to the hard work and dedication she has put into her netball career that she has been chosen to compete at this level.

“It is also a huge achievement that she is able to manage her studies and complete placements at the same time as training and playing netball at such a high level. We all wish her lots of luck for the summer.”

Brilliant – Kudos to the group that are behind the resurgence of Netball in Bermuda.

Would love to see the same degree of energy and direction given to youth female softball as there are considerable educational opportunties for softball scholarships in the US.

Further, it provides our young ladies the opportunity to engage in organized sports at a young age.

Again Kudos to Ms Baxter and the Netball Association..
