Smith Sets New Record In Estonia

Bermuda’s Tyrone Smith finished second at the 2nd Big Kuldliiga Indoor Series Track Meet in Estonia, setting a new Bermuda record in the process.

Competing in his third Long Jump Indoor event in less than a week, Smith leaped to a Bermudian Indoor Record of 7.82m at the European event.

He leaped 7.60m on his first attempt, he then reached 7.66m on his second attempt. Following a foul on his third attempt, Smith leaped 7.54m on his fourth attempt, another foul followed before his record setting leap on his sixth and final attempt.

Elvijs Misans from Latvia won the Men’s event with a top leap of 7.87m, Tonis Sahk from Zimbabwe finished third with a top leap of 7.53m.

Smith, the island’s top male long jumper, has won two international competitions so far this year; the MSSU Invitational in Missouri and the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Texas.

Last year he made the top 10 in the World Championships held in Korea, won a Bronze medal at the Luzern Spitzen Leichtathletik Track Meet in Switzerland, a Bronze medal at the Leichtathletik Track Meet in Germany, won the IAAF World Challenge/Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Japan, and won a Gold Medal in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Track and Field Championships in Puerto Rico
