John Barry Nusum said it was an “honour” to coach the Bermuda national football team on their recent trip to the United States.

The former Bermuda captain has stepped up to lead the team after Michael Findlay left his role as head coach in March.

Nusum previously served as an assistant to the Canadian coach.

Bermuda lost 4-0 to United Soccer League Championship side Rhode Island, coached by Bermudian Khano Smith, and 3-0 to Cape Verde in East Hartford, Connecticut.

“Always an honour to represent my country in any capacity, but to have represented as a player for years as an assistant coach and now to lead the team our as the interim ‘gaffa’ is a blessing from God,” Nusum wrote on social media.

“Shout out to Danté Leverock, Jarreau Hayward and John Moreira and the rest of the staff for a solid prep week before the Cape Verde game. On to the next.”

Nusum led the Bermuda Under-23 side to the gold medal at the International Island Games in Orkney, Scotland, last summer.

Shaun Goater, the former Manchester City forward, declined an offer to become Bermuda’s next national football coach, it was reported this month.

Goater said he was offered the role by the Bermuda Football Association but, after “extensive discussions” between both parties, chose to rule himself out as a potential successor to Findlay.

A successor to Findlay has yet to be appointed by Bermuda.
