Bermuda Team Named For ‘England C’ Match

May 30, 2013

[Updated with video] The Bermuda Football Association has named the Bermuda Team who will match up against the “England C” squad in an international friendly at the National Stadium this coming Tuesday [June 4].

The captain will be John Barry Nusum, and some of the island’s professional football players who play overseas will take to the field including Toronto FC’s Reggie Lambe, Crawley Town’s Jonte Smith, Antigua Barracudas’ Taurean Manders and Stoke City’s Dale Eve.

There are also three UK Non league team members that have returned to Bermuda to participate in this match: Antwan Russell, Lejaun Simmons and Donte Leverock.

Nahki Wells — who recently became the first Bermudian to score at the iconic Wembley Stadium — will not be playing, but will be in attendance at the match. The BFA plan to recognise the 22-year-old Bermudian for his accomplishments at half time.

The full Bermuda team is: John Nusum [Captain], Freddy Hall, Dale Eve, Lejaun Simmons, Tre Ming, Reggie Lambe, Roger Lee, Jason Davis, Dante Leverock, Taurean Manders, Keishen Bean, Ashton Bell, Damon Ming, Tyrell Burgess, Drewonde Bascome, Domico Coddington, Jonte Smith and Antwan Russell. Standbys: Dominique Williams, Daniel Johnson and Angelo Simmons.

This match was made possible by the initiative of the England FA who contacted the BFA to indicate that their National C Team wanted to play against Bermuda. The 16-man England C squad has already been named.

Update 1.31pm: A BFA spokesperson said, “This match is a significant one, as it is the first time that an official England team will visit our island and compete against our National Team in football.

“The anticipated arrival of the England C Team under the management of Mr. Paul Fairclough, who also serves as the Director of Football for the Barnet Football Club, has piqued the interest of our players and coaching staff.

“The England C team is made up of players who are signed with Conference National League clubs and provides a platform to seek a professional contract in one of the four divisions of English Football. As of 2012, the England C team has faced National U23 opposition from Italy, Russia, Belgium and most recently versus Turkey in a 1-0 loss.

“The Bermuda National Team will use this opportunity to build towards the NatWest Island Games to be held in Bermuda from July 13th -19th.”

This would be a great opportunity to garner public sport. Be mindful when pricing admission. Give a certain amount of “FREE” tickets to students with a stipulation that they must be in uniform to utilize the tickets. Promote the game to all visitors at every property. Offer an incentive for them to attend. There is a relatively large UK Guest Worker population in Bermuda. Incent them to attend the game. The goal should be to have The National Stadiun Sports Complex overflowing with attendees. Be sure all concession stands are fully operational and appropriately staffed. Lest I forget please have ample visible Police and Bermuda Regiment personnel on hand to prevent any unsightly behavior.
