Author Loves Bermuda, Bases Novels Here

July 11, 2013

Author Marilyn Baron may not hail from our tiny island, but she’s learned to love it as a second home, and her latest two works of fiction serve as evidence of just that.

A public relations consultant from Atlanta, Baron fell in love with the island years ago during her first of more than ten subsequent visits, making it a home away from home for her and her family each and every time the opportunity for a vacation presented itself.

As her career took a turn towards fictional writing, it was only natural that Bermuda would serve as the colourful backdrop for one of her earliest publishing efforts, titled Under the Moon Gate, and its prequel short story, Destiny: A Bermuda Love Story.

Marilyn Baron

“I fell in love with Bermuda when my husband and I first visited and we have been back at least ten times since then with our family and friends on vacation,” said Baron of the island.

“It is my favorite place to travel and I love everything about it. I wanted other people to fall in love with Bermuda, too, which is why I set my books there, as a tribute to beautiful Bermuda and a thank you for all of the wonderful memories we have of our visits there.”

Featuring romance, intrigue, and everything in between, both the full-length novel and short story have something to offer any fan of fiction, with their intricate weaving through Bermudian life and history making them a perfect read for those who love the island as much as Baron does.

Under the Moon Gate follows the adventures of debonaire sea captain Nathaniel Morgan, a man who unexpectedly finds himself in the midst of high class intrigue and deceit as he works his way into the life of Bermuda heiress Patience Whitestone in order to locate a cache of World War II-era Swiss gold that he is convinced lies beneath the soil of her expansive island property.

Despite her initial loathing for the captain, Whitestone slowly but surely finds herself drawn to the man’s allure, even as they attempt to ward off a mutual enemy that would see them both destroyed, making for a real page-turner that offers all of the romance and intrigue that one could want!

Making Baron’s novel particularly appealing to Bermudian readers is the fact that her obvious love for the island shines through in every page. Weaving together the main story, Nazi plots, and the island’s own beauty and history, the book reads as a love story of not only the captain and impetuous heiress, but also as a love story with Bermuda itself.

Instead of focusing on the cliches that the island has come to be known for by outsiders, such as the Bermuda Triangle, Baron’s rich knowledge of Bermuda, both present and past, allows her to paint a full and compelling picture of the island in every scene and within every sub-plot, making it a treasure trove of knowledge that will have even lifetime inhabitants learning new and interesting facts about their home island.

Set more than 200 years before the events of Under the Moon Gates, this short story acts as something of a prequel to the full-length novel, tying together common themes in order to provide readers with exactly the story-within-a-story that fans of the tale of Nathaniel Morgan and Patience Whitestone are looking for.

Destiny explores the relationship of two unlikely lovers when their vessel, the Sea Venture, is shipwrecked off of the Bermuda coast while en route to provide aid to the starving Jamestown Colony in the seventeenth century. Edward Morgan, a descendant of the the captain featured in Under the Moon Gates is a married man who is seduced by the captain’s daughter, who eventually becomes pregnant with his child.

With differing fates and the odds against them, the story follows the challenges that they face in reaching a destiny that will bring them together with one another, and with Bermuda itself.

  1. Thank you very much for featuring Under the Moon Gate and the prequel, Destiny: A Bermuda Love Story. I hope everyone who reads the books will enjoy them. The prequel starts with the discovery of Bermuda and Under the Moon Gate highlights the “rediscovery” of Bermuda. In addition to the three love stories in the books, my hope is that people who read them will “rediscover” what a treasure Bermuda is and visit or return for another visit.
