Minister Dunkley To Meet With Local Bar Owners

July 16, 2013

Tomorrow [July 17] Minister of Public Safety Michael Dunkley is meeting with several owners and operators of licensed premises to discuss safety and security measures at local establishments.

The Minister first outlined the Ministry’s intent during a statement to the House of Assembly on July 5. At that time the Minister said proposals being discussed included mandatory ID checks or “carding” on entry to bars and nightclubs, and activating the bar code on every driver’s license to assist in ID checks at licensed premises,

Minister Dunkley said at the time, “Owners and operators of licensed premises should be able to promote their establishments and welcome their patrons without the requirement for undue layers of security.

“Patrons of licensed premises should be able to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of their chosen night-spot without worrying about violence or general anti-social behaviour in their midst. However, recent incidents have demonstrated the need for extra care to be taken and for owners and operators of licensed premises to remain vigilant and to be prepared to take action.

“The Ministry of Public Safety believes that there is a wealth of knowledge about the running of licensed premises in Bermuda and there is the potential for industry success where we encourage effective, open communication and collaboration around best practice in the area of security and safety in this business.

“The aim of this meeting is to hear directly from those people most familiar with the issues that exist in this business today and to initiate a dialogue which will promote a safer environment for them and their patrons.”

The discussions with owners takes place tomorrow afternoon and Minister Dunkley advised that he will provide an update following the meeting.

It all plays out like a predictable plot, not much imagination has been put into the actual story line to leave any suspense.

  3. Time Shall Tell says:

Wasn’t these very same meetings held under the last government which mandated the increase of provided security at these very establishments?

  4. stuckin1965 says:

We don’t go to bars.Too dangerous for us regular peeps.
Went to bars in Toronto,NY,Amsterdam. Always felt safe. Here wanna be gangsters get real tough late at night and prey need to act out.

    • Brad says:

Agree 100%. I used to go out and spend my money here all the time but no more. Why risk being in a place where you know there are gang members just for a beer. I can have a beer at my house with my mates and not worry one bit about getting in the middle of this gang BS.

  9. Watcher says:

Too many bar owners are only interested in the almighty dollar and have let there premises go to hell. Just look at the beach, yeah it’s busy but it’s over run with wannabe gangsters and theyre hangers on. Cairo isn’t much better, think the public would be astonished if they sat down at the corner of Front and Parliament Fri-Sun evenings and watched the sea of drunken humanity that gathers there and the abuse the public and worse the police have to deal with. It’s a circus and the licensees just wash their hands of it.

  10. Watcher says:

Also if I remember rightly didn’t the police, try and start some neighborhood watch thing for the bars so they could ban folks who acted the a$$? What ever happened to that? Let me guess too much hassle for bar owners…

    • Confused..... says:

Yes they did. Even tried to get bouncers and security trained but the police backed out cause of not wanting to ‘dictate’ things. They should as they licence the security staff so they should regulate what training is needed. The bar owners wanted and banned list, website, and ban form one banned from all policy but not all the bar owners have the money to facilitate the cost to set up and run it.

      • Tommy Chong says:

Owners don’t need a list when all the bouncers here know who are gang affiliated. Owners can refuse anyone excess into their establishment for a good reason. Then again drug money can buy lots of rounds of drinks.

  11. Clubs need to do physical pat downs and be tough. The security team of Gravity Night Club was on point. The men got searched physically and the women were searched physcially as well by the female security guards. Women use to try and bring in stuff in their bags for their man, but were turned away or made to take the illegal things back to their cars and then rechecked. ID was a must. If somebody did slip in it was because they had a good fake ID. But lots of time someone would report the minor to security and they were taken outside and told that they had to leave and they were banned for coming to the club until they were 18. In the beginning there was some protest to the pat downs but after a couple of weeks people stop fussing and willingly lifted arms and turned around for the pat down. Occassionally a minature bottle found or flask found. At times some folk were told to get back in the car or taxi they came in as they were not welcome. Some folk got banned for a month if they acted up and then it was up to the manager if she wanted them in there. It also helped that the cameras were manned all the time inside and out and the manager would call down to give specific instructions. Enjoyed going and being there. So clubs use your security staff to the fullest. TEAM GRAVITY
