“If You Know Something, Say Something”

September 28, 2014

“Yesterday’s events were shocking and the community will be justifiably concerned at such violence,” Premier and Minister of National Security Michael Dunkley said today, adding that anyone with any information should contact the Bermuda Police Service or CrimeStoppers.

The Premier was speaking after yesterday’s incident, which saw suspects on a motorcycle chase a BMW car through Devonshire, Paget, Warwick and Southampton, with the vehicle eventually crashing into a wall in Southampton after gunshots were fired into the car.

The car crashed into a wall after being shot at:

“Over the course of yesterday and today, I have been briefed by the Commissioner of Police and tomorrow I expect to receive a further update about the latest efforts being undertaken to arrest those involved,” Premier Dunkley said.

“Yesterday, the Bermuda Police Service mobilised considerable resources to address this incident, and I want to thank them for their efforts.

“I also want to thank the public for their patience throughout yesterday evening, in the Southampton and Warwick areas, as there were several road blocks set up to ensure that the BPS could thoroughly investigate the matter.

Police Superintendent Martin Weekes speaking at the scene last night:

The Premier added, “At this stage, I want to encourage anyone wh‎o may have any information about yesterday’s shooting incident to please contact the Bermuda Police Service or CrimeStoppers. If you know something say something.”

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Police on 295-0011, or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

  1. But how....? says:

I can’t wrap my head around the fact that after a 10km chase no police saw this? 500+ officers and not one saw it?

    • somuchless says:

And I thought locals are pokey. Hmmm

      • X man says:

The locals are Pokey – perhaps the most Pokiest in the World.— and Judgmental too!
Wait to must of them find out more particulars on the driver of the Vehical so they can make judgment.

    • Terry says:

      As stated prior.
      Never mind.
Think about a drive from Pembroke to Southampton.
      Opportunity.

      Where are your children.
      Men in white……

    • Micro says:

Was the car actually chased or just followed from the Tee Street area as alleged with the shooting starting in the vicinity of the hotel?

You see a car and a bike travelling at speed do you really think
something is going on or just a bunch of idiots speeding?

      When was it actually reported?

      • shellshocked says:

I believe the shots didn’t start till they hit Warwick area. Hence the road being blocked off from Warwick Lane to Henry VIII until 11pm.
I heard about 6 shots around 5:15 first part of Warwick Long Bay area and later the forensics found the casing from the bullet in that area. From what I was told it was that whole stretch they were searching with K9. Prior to that I guess it just looked like a high speed chase.

    • The Dark Knight Returns says:

I heard someone say that only armed officers in the force are allowed to confront armed suspects. I also heard the ratio is 1 armed officer to every 20 unarmed officers in the force. If this is true then no wonder why these chaps can run rampant in the streets and for such a long distance. I think it is about time that all officers on the frontline in the force should be armed. That way there could be a larger amount of officers to deply. Could you imagine if innocent bystanders were killed. Come milk man get it together if the Cchief Constable can’t do it get someone else that can.

      • What's up? says:

Do you seriously think all of the officers in the BPS are suitable to be trusted with a firearm? Think again. The BPS is a poorly run, unprofessional operation that needs to be streamlined via an more selective recruiting process.

        • more than enough says:

Just another over funded over staffed government department, for the most part.

        • do ya homework says:

Mate look at the USA do you think every officer in all of their forces are suitable to carry firearms?

      • do ya homework says:

I agree to an extent. Though there should be the option of non lethal methods.

    • X man says:

I have wondered myself how we live in society of such close proximity of each other yet there is so much stuff we
just don’t see – possibly due to the twist and turns and the natural geography of Bermuda – so
there have been many accounts of good and bad incidents were there was simply no witness around.
I’m sure the Driver got to see a little something of worth to the Police.

      • Strike fund says:

If everybody stuck to the 35k speed limit then the 50+ speeds would be far more suspicious, draw attention and get reported.

The poor driving habits on our roads is providing good cover for these incidents as high speeds are a daily occurrence and not seen as suspicious. Bikes fly past me in excess of 60 every day.

Is it realistic to expect everyone to travel at 35k?

  2. Need Peace says:

Imagine that! This saga occurred through four parishes and wasn’t intercepted by any police officers. Doesn’t surprise me that they’re always the last responders to a shooting incident.

  3. Greed Killed Bermuda says:

Dunkley, is your CCTV working? Or was that just a nice contract to give some people a nice contract.

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

yeah..i was waiting for dunkleys address and you’re right …no mention of the eye in the sky…hmmmm…ARE they working or NOT Mr. Dunkley..!!?

      • Barracuda says:

Oh please , do you think he is going to tell you about the cameras? Do you watch crime shows at all ? The Police catch the majority of these criminals because they are ignorant.

        • more than enough says:

Oops! Too late, maybe you should have told him. There was a story about the system recently.
          Talk about ignorant.
“The fool becomes wise in his silence.”

  4. So the driver didn’t have a cell phone to call the police.

    • Impressive says:

thats a $500 ticket,, just saying,,

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

well if he used his cell he might have been pulled over and booked to the fullest extent of the law…in all seriousness though…why didnt the passenger call 911 or video the entire experience…i think they know or have a very good idea who these culprits are and the reason that this took place.
I have a go-pro on my dash and one in my rear window…just waiting i am. in my opinion NO ONE is serious about what is happening around them, eliminating the cause therefore exhibiting no symptoms…

    • Micro says:

Would imagine he was more concerned with getting away and not getting caught by the police either than calling 911.

    • Rockfish #1 says:

Given the circumstances, do you really think the driver should have stopped driving and made a phone call?

    • more than enough says:

Hey sexy chocolate…you got a cell phone?

  5. Mr.Speaker says:

I kno the cctv footage caught the plates of the bikes prior to the shooting

    • Rick Rock says:

Nice idea but most bikes don’t display a visible number plate. Nothing at the front, and the back plates are tiny things usually with bike locks carefully placed over them so they can’t be read.

It would be an idea to make them display large number plates front and back. But as it stands all the hi-def pictures in the world won’t help.

    • shellshocked says:

the license plate was probably covered. They had their shoes covered and were wearing white overalls, so i would think their license plate was pretty much covered.

      • Pure Madness!!!!!! says:

And how would you know this, cause I don’t recall seeing that written anywhere.. HMMMMMM!!!!!

  6. Vato Loco says:

The lack of police presence in our roads is a common occurrence, why are we surprised?

  7. Kangoocar says:

Let me help you Prem Dunkley, have the police take the victim into custody the moment he can leave the hospital and hold him until he talks!!!! The time has long past for us to get serious about dealing with these types!!! If we don’t, we are all doomed!!!!!!

  8. Hurricane says:

Driver probably wants no buisness with police. Go figure!

  9. Coffee says:

I know something , and I’ll say it ! Micheal Dunkeley , Jeff Baron our confidence in your ability to get a handle on this type of crime is diminishing shot by wretched shot !

    • ..I.. says:

      lolol

    • Barracuda says:

You just need to stop your ignorant posting. No one likes you , you offer nothing , and you are drawing the life out of people . If you have nothing good to say , just go away .

      • Coffee says:

Why , thank you for acknowledging the awesome power and influence I have over your people ! Honestly I had no idea . Now tell me about that drawing of life bit , is it fast acting ?
I’ll promise you that I will stay until I get an answer .
Coffee , the liquid Assassin . LOL
We have the inalienable right to hold our elected officials accountable for issues of national security !

      • Coffee says:

Hey .. Thanks for the fan mail !

    • do ya homework says:

What did plp do better in this situation?

    • Impressive says:

Coffee, I am not a OBA supporter,, not in a million years, but do you honestly believe that any politician can stop crime?? I am not saying that we should give up on tackling crime and its direct and indirect effects on our community, but crime has been with us for the last few hundred years.. Many politicians use it as a tool to get elected and make promises, but if individuals are intent on carrying out a particular act, there isn’t much that a politician can do.. You can make all the laws in the world, and put police on every corner, but you certainly can’t legislate appropriate moral and ethical behavior.. My opinion ofcourse.

  10. drunken ursula says:

come on people that time of day the roads are busy.. you mean to tell me no buses were passed during that high speed the driver and passengers must be interviewed..

  11. D says:

Suggest rewward money, they will start talking

  12. do ya homework says:

All bermuda is lacking is island wide cctv. Someone call the quenn and tell her donate some of her cameras

  13. the correct facts says:

More Police on our roads. More cameras and more of us getting along and pulling together is what is needed.
To many people getting bent out of shape in support of thier political party which somehow appears to turn into a racial discussion.
come people , we give a torist the shirt off our backs but have a bad attatude with each other.
    im all in !!!!!!

  14. yamon says:

Instead of crashing into that wall, the car should have smashed into the thugs on the bike, reversed over them and parked until the police came.

  15. more than enough says:

“If you know something say something” in other words they know nothing.
And today’s oxymoron award goes to the bps for “police intelligence”

  16. Terra says:

Ya true, the car should have slammed on their brakes and hoped the bike went flying…!

  17. Raymond Ray says:

    A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
There are two possible outcomes: If the result confirms the hypothesis, then you’ve made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you’ve made a discovery. -Enrico Fermi, physicist and Nobel laureate (1901-1954)

  18. Reality says:

next thing to happen in Bermuda is these dumb guys killing innocent bystanders via bullets ricocheting off cars etc. watch, it will happen!

  19. Lone Wolf says:

The Police know a lot more than they will ever let the public know. Not because they don’t want to but because they are bound by law to keep certain things from the public. It all boils down to EVIDENCE. They can know 100% who the shooters are but without some form of physical evidence to present in court, they have no case. That is why they need help from the general public. Without witness statements and/or people willing to testify in court & without physical evidence (fingerprints, cctv footage, etc) they have nothing. Not to mention that in this day and age, the criminals have more rights than the victims. Have you ever been to a court trial? I have seen many of them. EVERYONE is on trial EXCEPT the accused. Witnesses, police, victims and other ‘experts’ get GRILLED by the defence on every little detail while the ‘accused’ can just sit there and never take the stand at all if they don’t want to. And God forbid if there is one tiny mistake made by any one of the many people trying to do the right thing, the whole case gets thrown out. Furthermore, even if the ‘accused’ does get found guilty they are given such a weak sentence and are back out on the streets before we can bat an eye to terrorize the public again. So it has nothing to do with police intelligence and everything to do with a very poor justice system and lack of help from people who have information on any given crime.

On a positive note: Well done to those citizens who DO come forward and help police to get convictions. If we had more people like you, we would have less crimes.

  20. the ombudsman says:

You drive with tinted windows and the police are all over your a$$ like your a criminal ….but shoot at a person in broad daylight and chase them for over a few miles and not a cop in sight ??

  21. Jeremy Deacon says:

It is a great shame that after some very considerable sentences this happens. It serves to remind us that we still have a long way to go to rid the Island of this gangster scourge.
But … more worryingly is that they think they can get away with this brazen behavior. It only needs one stray bullet to hit a US tourist and, well, I need not say more …. As it is, I wonder what the tourists at the hotel were thinking …
It is beholden on the community to come forward and help the police arrest and jail those who perpetrated this crime.

  22. hmmm says:

IF these guys were cricketers and the cricket was cancelled. Then permenantly cancel cricket until they are caught and imprisoned.

Perhaps those in the sport will rethink about who they allow to play cricket.

  23. TMC says:

The car was a BMW what does that tell you.

    • Grizz says:

@TMC what does the make of the car have to do with anything? Sound like a true hater..stick to what’s relevant!

  24. Lone Wolf says:

  25. MAKE MY DAY says:

You know the expression – $$$ talks and BS walks!! If the price-is-right, then someone will talk!! The guy being “chased” and shot at will know something as well!
