Videos: Bermuda vs Bahamas Goals, Celebration

March 29, 2015

The Bermuda national football team had the crowd on their feet today [Mar 29], driving home three goals in some 10 minutes to claim a 3-0 victory over the Bahamas and advance to the next 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying round.

Bermuda’s starting line-up was Freddy Hall, Jaylon Bather, Tyrrell Burgess, Jaylen Harvey, Drewondae Bascome, Zeiko Lewis, Dante Leverock , Keishen Bean, Justin Donawa, Reggie Lambe and Nahki Wells, with Andrew Bascome serving as head coach.

Before the match, Coach Bascome said, “It’s important that we use this game as preparation for Guatemala, because Guatemala is going to be tough.

“I know our players have enough character to make sure we don’t lose by six goals, so that’s not really my concern – my concern is to make sure we cover all the basic principles, both in defense and offense.

“It’s good to see the fans come out to see Bermuda play, and hopefully we can display a football that reflects their character also: hard work, teamwork.”

Around thirty minutes into the game Justin Donawa was replaced by Jonte Smith after suffering an injury, and the two teams went into the half-time break with neither team having scored.

The second half began with change of goalkeeper for Bermuda, with Dale Eve replacing Freddy Hall, and the score remained at 0-0 until the 79th minute when Bermuda came alive — much to the delight of the sold out crowd.

Nahki Wells, who had earlier missed a penalty, opened the scoring in the 79th minute, with Tyrell Burgess making it 2-0 in the 82nd minute, before Wells struck again in the 87th minute to give Bermuda the 3-0 victory.

Speaking after the game, Nahki Wells, who plays professionally in the UK, told Bernews: “I’m happy to be playing in front of my nation again, and I’m happy to get the win. It’s nice to see so many familiar faces, and put a smile on the nation.”

Today’s 3-0 victory follows after Bermuda’s 5-0 victory in the first game against the Bahamas, and with their 8-0 aggregate win, Bermuda will advance to the next round and will take on Guatamala.

Great win Bermuda. Enjoy your well deserve victory. Congrats to the entire coaching staff. Please keep these wonderful young men grounded as the next team we face is more formidable. Guatemala is ranked 87 in the world. That is 82 places above us. However if we stay grounded and stick to the plan we can beat them at home (with the twelfth man help) and away!

Without a doubt, Bermuda teams deserves a congratulation.
I also want to extend my gratitude to them that worked behind the “post” e.g. Bernews. You had done a great job in getting the up-dates out to us / them that were unable to attend the match due to various reasons.

Congratulations to our National Team,Coach Andrew Bascome, their families, fans and followers of the respective local & overseas teams our players play for. Yesterday I saw Bermuda as ONE :D . Wells is the danger man and regardless of who we play in our journey towards the finals every other countries national team will know this. I am proud, I am happy and I am totally impress with our local media esp Bernews keeping everyone up to date on our players performances overseas weather they score or not when they play. This type of exposure gives them more confidence. I hope one day Bermuda does make it to a World Cup final berth. Just reaching that level will be the crowning glory on every player and to play against some of the world best ballers on that stage. I would buy a ticket to those games for sure. Good Luck in all your endeavours “Gombey Warriors”

This current team can make it past Guatemala with ease. They don’t have any players playing at the level that Nahki Wells plays at every week and we totally dominated Bahamas who are a much larger country then us. I think we should be huge favorites against Guatemala after our performance over the last week. Go Bermuda!!!!!!

    • TonyC says:

Not a chance will Bermuda be favorites, but it should be close. Guatemala are used to playing in front of 20,000 crowds, that can be very intimidating if they’re all cheering for the other team.

Any chance that the National Stadium can bring in additional bleachers for behind the goals for the home leg? Get the place full and rockin?
