Berkeley Students Raise Money And Awareness

June 17, 2015

Students from The Berkeley Institute were working over-time the whole month of May to raise awareness and money for their school’s Chain Reaction Movement. Berkeley students and teachers participated in their school’s Race for Kindness by raising pledges and then running the Appleby Bermuda Day Half Marathon on May 25th, 2015.

Chain Reaction Movement is a pro-kindness initiative whose sole purpose is to impact teenagers with a culture of kindness and, in turn, the teenagers have the duty to spread that kindness across Bermuda. They do this through school club groups called Teams who meet weekly to work on team projects and personal acts of kindness.

Team projects include thank you letters to teachers, putting up encouraging posters throughout the school to encourage the student body, and even missions to spread kindness. One Team at Berkeley, Compassion In Action [CIA] came up with mission: “Hide and Seek”.

Team Leader, Yasser Baia said, “We actively go around school and look for students who appear to be lonely but try to hide it. We befriend them by inviting them to have lunch with us and hopefully make their day a little better. Our goal is to ensure that students have, not only a positive learning experience, but also positive social interactions at Berkeley.”

The hope of the Chain Reaction Movement is that this kindness will spread from person to person and change those student’s lives for the better. In the school, the program focuses on the students and provides mentors to help each student with whatever they are dealing with personally. The Teams meets weekly to work together, and with their own ideas and projects, encourage the student body as well as the teachers and school leaders.

Berkeley students are fully invested in their school’s Chain Reaction Movement and were hoping to raise support and money for their school’s Movement during the Race for Kindness. So far they have been able to raise $805.00, but the students are hoping they can still raise more money before the end of the school year. The money they raise will go completely towards funding The Berkeley Institute’s own Chain Reaction Movement for the 2015-2016 school year.
