Bermudians planning to travel to the United States this weekend may want to confirm their flights directly with the airlines, with thousands of flights being cancelled as a major winter takes aim at the East Coast.

As of this writing, at least one Bermuda flight is showing as cancelled, with tomorrow’s [Jan 23] Delta flight #1773 scheduled to travel to New York in the afternoon showing as cancelled.

The New York Times reports, “The winter storm forecast to hit the East Coast from Washington, D.C., through New England this weekend is already scrambling travel plans, as airline cancellations reached 3,100 this morning with another 4,675 delayed, according to FlightAware.”

According to ABC, 22 states, from Louisiana to Massachusetts, will be impacted by the storm and a blizzard watch is in effect for Washington; Baltimore, Maryland; Wilmington, Delaware; Philadelphia; Trenton, N.J.; Newark, N.J.; New York City; and Long Island.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said that residents need to treat the storm as a life and death weather event. “We’ve had a forecast we haven’t seen in 90 years,” Bowser said at a news conference. “It has life and death implications.”
