One Month: No Shootings

May 4, 2010

In what can be taken as either a good sign, or a lull, Bermuda has experienced a 30 day stretch without a confirmed shooting incident. This is a very positive comparison to previous [approximately] 30 day periods this year:

  • March 4 to April 4: Two murders, and eight people shot
  • Feb 4 to March 4: Two people shot
  • Jan 4 to Feb 4: One murder, two people shot

In an another encouraging sign, the last 30 days have seen four suspects charged in relation to shootings; Sanchay Grant charged in relation to the 2009 Southside shooting, and three men charged for the 2010 Easter shooting.

The Police have also increased crime fighting measures in the recent 30 day period, including equipping approximately 30% of officers with tasers, and announcing a wide range of measures including receiving specific anti gang training from the FBI, joining in with FBI operational attachments, in excess of a dozen new firearm officers brought in from the UK, and specialist investigation officers also being brought in.

Update May 5: In what can only be described as a sad irony, the day after this article was posted, a man was shot and killed, and a gas station robbed at gunpoint.
