$70 Fine For Driver: 6 Kids with No Seat Belts

October 22, 2010

62-year-old Kenneth Williams pleaded guilty in Magistrates Court yesterday (Oct 21) to the charge of Carrying Passengers in an Unlawful Manner, stemming from an incident which occurred on August 14.

According a news report from ZBM, Police stopped Mr Williams`s vehicle and found six children as well as adults in the car – and none of them were wearing seat belts.

The children were between aged from 1 to 11. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner told Mr Williams “The moral of the story is, when you have young children in the car, they have to be secured.”

Mr Williams, of Paget, was fined $70.

  1. Joke says:

    I’m not sure a paltry $70 fine sends a very stern message…

  2. Typo? says:

did you mean $700?? maybe we should just get rid of laws in bermuda…they don’t seem to make a difference anyway….

    • D says:

I agree with you mate. Would you believe that after running a red light, I was pulled over by an officer. There were two vehicles in front of me so I turned around and pulled chase. The officer pulled me over again half a KM later, thus letting the other vehicles go. All I got was a $50.00 fine.

  3. Jays says:

70 bucks is not going to stop anyone from doing anything unlawful. Come on, we have to spend hundreds of dollars if we go over 50k and we’re only putting ourselves in danger, he had 7 other peoples lives in his hands..

    • Call as it is says:

      @Typo…it WAS $70!!!! not 700.
@Jays…’and we’re only putting oursleves in danger’…Who are you trying to fool!!

Fact:-this guy is Dangerous and should should have had his license revoked for at least 3 years AND made to take the Driving Test again

      • Scott says:

to be honest, i think a harsh number of points should be applied and this needs to be dealt with sternly..

buuut not sure what makin someoen take the test again will do… he passed it once and knows how to drive.. just because he disrespects the rules doesnt mean he cant just go and pass it again.. no real sweat off his back

  4. Truth is killin' me says:

Now now…he was just helping out on the taxi front since it’s so hard to get buses and taxis these days to get your kids of to school!

  5. S says:

I agree 70 is not enough but I do not agree with Jay… Going over 50 k we spend hundreds on fines and we are only endangering ourselves ??? what road do you drive on ?? what if you are driving over 50 k and hit that car with 7 children in it ?? Think before you speak

  6. Mr Green says:

This guy and the other adults are retards. Who doesn’t at least secure a one year old? The driver should have been fined enough to make him think twice about doing that again. I was just in an accident on Monday and thank goodness I was strapped in. No I wasn’t the one driving either.

  7. Yng Black Mind says:

This is a prime example of how the judges in this country do not think before they pass their decisions. The law is very clear on this matter – - if anyone was stopped on the road without their seatbelt fastened, you would receive a minimum $50 ticket – so in this case, the fine should have been at least $350 for the offence. BUT it boils down to what he was charged with – “Carrying Passengers in an Unlawful Manner” – - check bermudalaws.bm and you will see that he was given the appropriate fine for that offence – - stupid – yes, but lawful – - the system needs to be fixed – - too much power in the hands of those who choose not to use it (judges) – - bottomline.

  8. terry says:

True to a degree there Yng. The fault lies with the officer who wrote the ticket not with the Magistrate. Thanks for pointing that out. Maybe the cop knew him…….
