‘Lilla’ First to Finish Marion to Bermuda

June 20, 2011

Taking only three days to make the 645-mile ocean crossing, the 76-foot yacht Lilla was the first to finish the 2011 Marion to Bermuda Yacht Race, crossing the finish line at St David’s Head in Bermuda today [June 20]

‘Lilla’ – skippered by Simon De Pietro – started off leading the pack when the race started this past Friday [June 17] in Buzzards Bay off Marion, Massachusetts.

Southcoasttoday reported that, “Lilla, a Philippe Briand maxi-yacht, is the largest boat in the race and, no surprise, pulled out in front before the fleet left Buzzards Bay. The 76-footer is sailing in her debut MBR this year, having come up from her home port in Kingstown, St Vincent, to her summer port in Mattapoisett.”

Of the 53 registered boats, 50 boats crossed the starting line when the starting gun for Class D [11 boats] went off, however two boats returned within three hours. Former talk show host, and now Fox contributor Geraldo Rivera is taking part in the race.

The Marion Bermuda has been sailed in alternate years since 1977, and covers the 645 miles between Marion and Bermuda. You can view photos of the start of the race here, and track the boats here.
