Marine & Ports Lends Pilot To Oleander

July 21, 2011

image002The Department of Marine and Ports within the Ministry of Transport today advised that one of Bermuda’s pilots, Nicholas Maynard, departed on the Oleander on Tuesday, July 19 as replacement for the regular Chief Officer who was unable to depart as scheduled due to a medical issue.

The Oleander cannot sail without a qualified Chief Officer and Container Ship Management Ltd., as the Managers for Bermuda Container Line [BCL], asked Marine and Ports for help by providing on short notice a pilot to stand in as Chief Officer for the voyage back to New Jersey this week.

Earlier this year Pilot Maynard also sailed as a navigation watch keeper on the Oleander to and from Holland where the vessel underwent a major refit to extend her working life for a further 10+ years.

Failing to assist BCL with this request would have delayed the sailing of the Oleander out of Bermuda until a replacement Officer joined in Bermuda.

After successful medical treatment and two days of rest in Bermuda the vessel’s regular Chief Officer is now fit to rejoin the vessel today in New Jersey and BCL will fly Pilot Maynard back to Bermuda tomorrow.

Minister of Transport Terry Lister said: “I would like to commend the Department of Marine and Ports and Pilot Nic Maynard for quickly stepping in to assist one of our local companies. This sort of public/private partnership is essential in keeping Bermuda working.”
