Minister Joins Regiment Band In Canada

August 15, 2011

Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief joined the Bermuda Regiment Band in Ontario, Canada, as they participated in Fortissimo 2011.

“An historic event of which all Bermuda can be proud….”, said the Minister following his attendance at the Fortissimo Tattoo, which is built around the Beating Retreat and celebrates the heritage and history of Canadian Forces.

The two Bermuda Bands joined a cast of Canadian military bands and pipes including the The Royal Canadian Artillery Band and the Pipes and Drums of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa.

In the setting of Ottawa’s Parliament Hill, the Band and Corps of Drums made history by participating in the ceremonial Changing of the Guard on Saturday [Aug.13] morning. Director of Music Capt. Dwight Robinson said, “This was a first for the Band and is an experience we will not soon forget.”

Bermuda’s participation in Fortissimo was notable in that Minister Perinchief joined Reviewing Officer Lt. General Peter Devlin, Chief of Defence Staff (Land Forces) on the dias to take the salutes of the units on parade.

“This was a singular honour and I was humbled to represent Bermuda on this grand stage,” Mr. Perinchief said.

The performance completed, in a tribute to the long-standing relationship between Bermuda and Canada, Pipe Major A. David Frith of the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band and their Lady Dancers presented General Devlin with a Proclamation from Governor Sir Richard Gozney, marking the men and women of both countries who made the ultimate sacrifice in both World Wars, particularly noting those Canadians buried in Bermuda.

Lt. Colonel Gonsalves, who also attended the performance said, “The band continues to do Bermuda and the Regiment proud. These men and women willingly sacrifice their time and their efforts produced an outstanding performance for an international audience that was greatly appreciative. “

    Quite delightful it sounds.

I am certainly proud to be Bermudian and ‘show the flag’ overseas but can someone please tell us how much this cost Bermuda to send everyone involved (plus the “hangers on”) at a time when we cannot even feed, let alone house, Bermudians?

    • Terry says:

      Simple ‘Rumandcoke’…….

Less than it costs to send the gangsters and rejects to Camp Lejune for two weeks to play army.

The Canadian’s took care of the accommodations and both Bermudian groups that took part raised the funds for their air fare.
