Six City Bermuda Tourism & Hotel Sales Blitz

May 16, 2013

The Bermuda Department of Tourism and island hotel representatives have, this week, completed the first segment of an aggressive, six-city sales blitz with strong attendance by key travel agents and media in crucial U.S. east coast geographic markets.

More than 210 travel agents and media have turned out thus far at events in Boston, Riverside, CT, Short Hills, NJ and New York City to learn more about Bermuda’s key selling points. Department of Tourism representatives were joined by island hoteliers, including: Fairmont Hamilton Princess and Fairmont Southampton, Grotto Bay Beach Resort, Newstead Belmont Hills Golf Resort & Spa, The Reefs, Pompano Beach Club, Rosedon and Rosewood Tucker’s Point.

Attendees were able to interact directly with hoteliers and Department of Tourism personnel, who, in keeping with the “So Much More” brand campaign, presented imagery from the island along with in-depth information on the distinctive experiences available, such as the ability to enjoy spa treatments within a spectacular underground cave, enjoy movies on the beach, and take advantage of dine around programs and special golf packages. As a result, business leads were already being generated at the events.

Following their stop in New Jersey, Bermuda officials are continuing their efforts with events in Philadelphia and Baltimore.

“We are extremely pleased with the strong attendance and enthusiastic feedback from both travel agents and target media,” said Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell. “Given the response received already from these events, it demonstrates that relationships with the right agencies and media are key to our success.

“All six cities that our team and partners will have visited represent essential markets in the core Northeast market, for Bermuda tourism, especially as we begin our peak tourism season,” said Minister Crockwell. “It is crucial that we continue to communicate to our travel agent partners, members of the media, and consumers in this region that Bermuda is a dynamic nearby destination that offers so much more.”

What! No running off to Africa, South America, China, Arab states, India, Antarctica or some other place where we don’t have a hope of getting a visitor from anymore?

    Back to the future.

    • Hmmmmm says:

Are you that biased that you’re suggesting this is new? This has been happening forever. They have nothing to sell that’s why it fails. Now that you all seem to have figured out that Dockyard is ok as the cruise ship site and that St. George’s is doing just fine with yachts and ferries bringing people in; and that al fresco dining with alcohol is ok and other trite ideas you rejected previously, NOW maybe you’ll accept that we have some product needs and that it doesn’t matter which Minister is jetting across the globe until we fix home first.

And of course we know there are no rich people in Africa, South America, China and the Arab states. That attitude is exactly why we can’t get ahead in tourism.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

Noope, not OK with Dockyard as the prime cruiseship site. Never was. The fact is that ships are too big for 2 rock & in 14 years Brown & the green gang never did anything about it. The cruise lines are using large ships & that is that. Can’t have a grass airstrip & expect heavy aircraft to land on it.

Under the PLP watch we lost Pink Beach, Ariel Sands, Horizons, Coral Beach, Sonesta (rubble), Lantana, drastic downsizing of EBSC & those are just the big ones.

Ships are the only game left in town & it takes 10 ship passengers to equal 1 air in financial benefit.

Brown & the Green Gang ignored the East Coast, especially the South East where some serious money is.

It is good to see attention being paid to where the fish are again.

        • Independent says:

          @ Triangle Drifter,

Speaking from a person who has had an internship in the oversease Tourism offices, I can let you know that the East Coast has been the target market for years, so please get your facts str8 mate.

      LOL !!!

  2. bye bye Tourism says:

Today I emailed the Southampton Princess to get a 3 day resident’s rate for August as my house is being fixed. North of $400 room only a night, and apparently that’s a deal.

You’ve got your work cut out with prices like that.

    • Clive Spate says:

Don’t forget to add on tax, resort levy and gratuities.

It annoys me when these special rates appear. Pay only $139 (plus …. etc.). Why does the bill increase by about 50% then? Just tell me how much you want up front!!

      • SoMuchMore says:

I called and asked for a room for the same night and was told between 250 and 455 and that was a deal. and what almost gave me a heart attack is that the tax and leavy was not included.

        so sad.

in the real world, the price and the market is supposed to match. bermuda hotels are way overpriced and you wonder why people prefer to cruise.

    • Bed Bug says:

@bye bye Tourism..if you can even think of staying at the Southampton Princess during the height of the busy season while your house is being renovated, then you can obviously afford it!

So stop moaning and pay the $400.00..or if not, get a room at Brightside…or the sleeep with the vagrants!! LMAO!!

  3. Servant says:

I just have one question – - who is paying for this “blitz”? As we are struggling to survive in this country, are we – the taxpayers – paying for these individuals (some of which work in the private section) to travel up and down the East Coast? I haven’t been off the island in about 2 years because I don’t have the funds to travel – - – apparently, my “travel” money is being used up by the government – providing trips to the private sector.

    • Hard Worker says:

I just shake my head when reading these comments. Alway focusing on the negative. ALLLWAYYYSSSS! Most have no idea how the government budget works.. most dont know much about most things. they just read an artical and start complaining. complain complain complain……. Rarely any constructive comments. These guys in the private sector as well as the tourism staff bust their butts with the tool they are givin. And regardless of the lack of support still give their all to better the country the best they can. Is it to much for you to just give support. yeah things can be better. but try educating yourself and give more constructive advise. where all in this togather people. We need to help each other. So what are you doing for the country? Here’s a start. Try saying something like this. “Great job Tourism Team. Hope you got some positive networking and get some future business for Bermuda. If the Hotels are over prices maybe its time to work on the product so it matches.”

      • Servant says:

        HW:

You can shove that “together” crap where the sun don’t shine! You wanna know why?

When you know how it feels not to be able to feed your family for weeks on end – - –
When you know how it feels not to have ANY income rolling into your house – - –
When you know how it feels having to choose between electricity or eating – - –

Then you can criticize what the hell I get to say or not say on this blog – - -

        • Amazed says:

Just because the private sector is in attendance it does NOT mean that government paid for it!!

          • Servant says:

            Really??

You are seriously going to believe that there was no “partnership” with the public sector to fund this blitz for the country.

            How naive.

  4. knowforafact says:

For the record folks. The private sector paid for their own tickets and accomodations. @Servant I am very sorry to hear about your delimma I hope it gets better soon. I have been there done that. To the New York Dept. of Tourism keep up the good work. You guys work hard I do know this despite what others may think.
