Tropical Storm Gabrielle School Closures

September 10, 2013

Earlier this evening [Sep 10] the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) advised  that in light of the strengthening winds associated with Tropical Storm Gabrielle a decision has been made that schools will remain closed tomorrow. This statement refers to Public schools.

The EMO also noted that there is a strong likelihood that some roads will be impassible tomorrow making it difficult for transport commuter routes, including those routes to get to schools.

While the Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO] confirmed earlier that all Government public schools will remain closed tomorrow, the Ministry of Education is advising that all related education staff and personnel, including teachers and Principals will be required to report to work as normal unless advised otherwise by updated EMO advisories. The EMO will provide a further update and assessment on all services tomorrow morning.

The following non Government schools have reported and confirmed that they will be closed tomorrow, namely:

Warwick Academy
Bermuda High School [BHS]
Somersfield Academy
Adult Education School

Saltus has notified parents via email, that they will be meeting at 7:00am tomorrow morning [11 Sep] to confirm whether they will be open or closed.

Further updates will be provided as we receive them.

Update 9.43pm: The Mount Saint Agnes Academy website states: “MSA will be open tomorrow for all students. Please pay attention to this website or listen to the local radio station for any further updates from MSA.”

Update 10.03pm: A spokesperson for Adventureland Preschool and Nursery said, “Adventureland Preschool and Nursery will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday [Sept 11] due to the current weather conditions. We hope to be open on Thursday. Sept 12th and will monitor what the government/EMO decide.”

Update 10.27pm: The Onionpatch Academy will be closed tomorrow due to Tropical Storm Gabrielle and reopen on Thursday.

  1. **** Happens says:

Saltus has to be so different just close ya doors like the other private schools.

    • ed says:

      Why

    • Z says:

It was only a tropical storm, which make it like our normal winter storms, if there is not damage to the school then why close in the first place?

    • Albert says:

Ah so it seems that Saltus made the best decision didnt they!!

  2. What's the point says:

I’m sorry but why make teachers go in? If your going to close then close. Don’t make the poor teachers go sit and do nothing all day.

    • WTF?! says:

Lesson plans. I need to come in and plan for next week. Better to go in and do something productive than get hated on by the community for doing nothing.

    • Moojun says:

So you’re clearly one of those people who thinks that teachers don’t have to prepare their lessons? That’s probably why you still confuse the relatively simple words “you’re” and “your”.

      • sick n tired says:

Technically lesson plans should have been prepared last week for this week…while you call yourself being smart and sarcastic!!!!!!

        • Moojun says:

I never called myself either of those. You did. And any teacher who doesn’t adapt their plan after actually meeting their new students at the start of a fresh term is, well, you can fill in the blank… you’re clearly a teacher.

  3. Parent says:

Just received an email from Bloomfield stating they are also closed tomorrow (wednesday) because of the TS.

  4. Done says:

I’m done with lesson plans. I’ve been prepared since last week so it’s going to be a long day. Oh well, seems the community likes to hate on teachers lately.

  5. Observer says:

Why not make tomorrow one of the teachers furlough days and juggle the schedule around and make it work rather than them sitting around doing nothing.

  6. Bermewjan says:

Teachers are the greatest! Love ‘em! Nobody works harder for our kids! No one! Point blank!

  7. Robert says:

I agree, if school is closed because of poor road conditions, let the teachers stay home as well, sounds like a vindictive permanent Secretary at work here !!!

  8. Frustrated-student says:

I leave for Saltus in 15 minutes and I still don’t know if it’s open.

  9. Kiskadee says:

It is ridiculous closing the schools .Parents will now be unable to go to work or will have to make other arrangements for having their children looked after. Saltus very wisely waited till this morning before deciding. The children are only back two days and now another holiday. Teachers should not be idle. A good teacher will always find something to do in her classroom.

  10. What is really going on says:

    Such a joke

  11. I'm just saying...... says:

People forget TEACHER’S ARE PARENTS TOO!

  12. Kiskadee says:

Glad to hear the schools all opened . With education in the state it is in children can’t afford to be off every time we have high winds . Make the decision early in the morning as Saltus did .
