Opinion: ‘Giving Our Inheritance To Strangers’

February 3, 2014

[Opinion column written by John H. Holdipp III] There exist a bewildering question about this so-called good governance method that is being portrayed in the island of Bermuda.

As I analyze the ways the sitting ruling party is implementing measures to seek a solution to our economic challenges, I am aghast that some intelligent people are installing mechanisms that will ensure much of the inheritance of Bermudians is being given to strangers from other lands.

The decision for us to be born on this island was not our own, however it is painful to witness the brutal punishment inflicted on the present and future generations of Bermudians. While I would wish that these injuries were accidental, it cannot be touted that way simply because a sightless person can conclude the eyes of the administration are open.

The influx of wealth using their methods will remove any level of redirection in the near future, as such will inflict great disparity for our offspring to experience. The pending usage of the last remaining open space up at Morgan’s Point, which was forced on the people of this country by the group known as BEST and their support to save a small piece of land most of us had never walked through was a major part of creating this debacle.

The deception or perhaps the truth of those actions on South Shore in Warwick only set in place our own demise. The participants in their ruthless vigour could not envisage the harmful impact they caused when they forced the sitting government of the day to exchange a large parcel of open land for unseen territory. Just think each and every one of you who protested for that small insignificant land have literally single-handedly undermined the present ability to create an answer to our economic problems.

When you think about it, we could have created an open space solution, engaged in developing a sustainable method of securing year round employment for all of our people, regardless of their education, skillset, and at the same time put in place a venture that would sustain all our future generations.

We could have at the same time created our unique version of a tourism product that would have been the envy of larger destinations. Along with this notion we could have maintained a significant portion of open space for the future generations to use if required. Even the international business segment of Bermuda would have been pleased at the value it could have bought to their appreciation of destination Bermuda.

Instead we are about to put Bermuda into another straight jacket which will surely destroy any hope of survival and prosperity for the people who were born on this 21 miles called home. A hotel, golf course and more condominiums only confirms this generations self-serving, ignoring our future offspring should have a right to a chance of economic prowess when they arrive.

We have nine golf courses inside 21 miles, we need to build and rebuild at least another three or four hotels, but we also need to enhance the opportunities of Born Bermudians living in their Homeland. This is good governance in any stretch of the word.

We should not give our inheritance to strangers from other lands no matter how much money they bring to the table. This is the epitome of foolishness and could be the epitaph of Bermudians.

Mr Holdipp, I suggest you read Mr Burchall’s latest opinion piece, This would be a good place to start your understanding of what is needed for little Bermuda to survive our very real economic crisis.

    • Black Soil says:

Mr. Holdipp. We put our faith in the PLP who are dominated by black nationalists who are inward looking, and distrusting like yourself. Look what happened. As an island nation, if Bermuda does not “get real” and understand that it is a speck in the middle of no where, this it will slowly die.

Go on, explain, sounds interesting. Explain exactly how your plan works. I’m all ears.

        • Black Soil says:

When I “think about it”, I think Mr. Holdipp is a DREAMER, who has NEVER employed people and dealt with the public in general. Also, to suggest that all would be OK if we people just “thought about it” is VERY ARROGANT.

hmmm very interesting, I can hear the echoes in my head of those same sentgiments I personally expressed many years ago about the influx of foreigners to the island and the potential impact…To say the least, I was lambasted and told that we need them , they contgribute to the insurance, pension plans ect….As much as I agree with you John, many people are still”asleep” and are not aware that robbers have been having a field day in our house for many years! Hopefully persons can see the bigger picture and not wait for it to knock at their door.. If I am called zenophobic than I would like to be treated in respect to my symptoms—being jobless, homeless, and hopeless in your own home, watching total strangers much like “aliens” being comfortable in our turf should raise cause for alarm, especially when we know that there is no reciprocity from the other countries/islands that would allow Bermudians to benefit from their economy..And still is it fair that they can make a salary in a year in Bermy and have house, land, school fees paid off, and we in Bermuda are still struggling for similar “dreams” ..I will not beg for sensitivity from those whose mentra is to destroy by any means necessary any other culture to save their own, but would like to prick the consciousness of the sleeping Giants!

Thanks for sharing Moms. I think Mr. Holdipp provides an insightful piece for many to digest and understand.

Interesting, and requires some to digest !

      • hmmm says:

        Government don’t build hotels !!!!!!!
It’s private enterprise. That private enterprise money comes from ????????

Is it the magic pony in the sky?

    • CBA says:

Yeah, and do you know why a large percent of the population has become jobless, poor and homeless recently? Because international business has been leaving over the past few years and taking the money and jobs with them! Even if you aren’t employed in IB, the entire island receives benefits from it.

As a younger Bermudian just starting out, I can’t stand when people are ignorant to the benefits we receive from IB. It’s posts like these that have contributed to the dramatic decline of wealth in Bermuda which, ironically, is blamed on “people taking our jobs”. If it continues on this trend you won’t have to worry, because our jobs will be so low-paying that nobody will want them!

I really hope the OBA gets on with this already so we can start to heal from the actions of the last party.

    • Darwin's Child says:

While I agree with your general statement Moms, Bermudians can actually benefit from all the economies in the EU if they choose to. Not saying they should do, and it’s a poor state of affairs if they feel they have choice but to to as their own country has nothing to offer them, but it is wrong to say there are no opportunities off-island.

    • hmmm says:

@moms. You just called all the expats in Bermuda “robbers” WOW.

What do you do on a daily basis to seek work?
what is your education? What have you done to advance yourself educationally?

      • el says:

@hmm sorry so late responding as I do work I am not always able to respond… I work for myself and have my own business.. I am aware of my surroundings and also the narrow minds of others who put economics before people. You could never walk in my shoes even if you were offered a million or more!

  3. more than enough says:

we’ve been pimping out bermuda to the highest bidders for years…
apparently people with big money are the only people that count.
meanwhile we are expected to bow and scrape at their feet for some crumbs falling off their exquisitely set tables.

    • hmmm says:

So, what is stopping you start a business? Only yourself to blame.

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

One can’t help but wonder if Mr Holdipp has ever run a business of any size, ever spent any time in tourism, anything at all other than being on somebody’s payroll with no accountability to come up with the cash on payday?

The whole piece is a load of emotional mumbo jumbo with no specifics, no viable suggestions on what to do to climb out of the hole that the PLP put us into.

Mogans Point is not open space. It was a very active military base. Nobody but nobody would want to put a hotel next door to the eyesore that is The Grand Atlantic so it is a good thing that the land will become a park.

If a foreigner comes in, gets non voting status, sets up an IB office & creates jobs, great. If he comes in simply to live here, also great. He will shop in the local markets, eat at restaurants, pay taxes, hire people to do his house maintenance, all done with currency brought in from overseas.

What is it that the John Holdipps of Bermuda don’t understand about economics?

    • el says:

the only cash that the international businesses and banks have is the cash from the labourers who are forced through legislation to pay to the insurance companies without a return,.. banks have no money except when people get a loan and start paying of that line of credit with cold hard cash that they have worked for, the John Holdipps of the world created the mechanics that make this economy; and the bankers are benefitting from the innocence of the people who are not aware that they are giving away free money to the real freeloaders of the world the INSURANCE COMPANIES who just take money and turn it over and that’s how it is done, it all started with the insurance of the slaves who were the only ones to generate money and business and who came up with most inventions that assist people in their daily lives today, I see $$$have made people blind to LIFE and humanity.

  5. Darwin's Child says:

    *no choice*

  6. swing voter says:

We’re all foreigners lol! No such thing as a Bermudian…you’re deluded to think your place of birth makes you more entitled. Even our system of government plays 2nd fiddle to Government house…Whitehall rules! the sooner we admit this to ourselves, the better off we will be. Perhaps we’ll want to ensure the next generation can seriously consider independence, instead of bickering over our perceived ‘rights as Bermudians’.

  7. Tolerate says:

Well written and excellent points. Unfortunately the only thing we have to hand down to future generations currently; is debt. Until this is addressed, our future will carry a weight on their shoulders and more than likely see their “inheritance” as a burden.
Paradise will come at a great expense.
