Arlene Brock Joins Casino Gaming Commission
Richard Schuetz, Executive Director of the Bermuda Casino Gaming Commission today [Oct 1] announced that Ms. Arlene Brock would be joining the Commission as its General Counsel. Ms. Brock will begin working with the Commission immediately.
A spokesperson said, “The well-known and respected Ms. Brock was the First Ombudsman for Bermuda, having served in that position for eight and one-half years.
“During her tenure as Ombudsman she established that Institution as a fair and trusted voice for administrative justice on the Island, as well as distinguishing herself as a leader within the global Ombudsman program.
“In addition to her leadership of the Bermuda office, she also was the Director & Vice President for the Caribbean & Latin America at the International Ombudsman Institute, where she also served as the Chair of the International Training Committee.
“Ms. Brock was as a Mediator/Trainer for Conflict Management Inc. [of the Harvard Negotiation Project], has served in the New York Office of the United Nations Center for Human Rights, and has held a number of esteemed positions with the Bermuda educational, public, private, and administrative-judicial sectors.
“Ms. Brock is a featured speaker around the world on the topics of Human Rights, Good Government, Transparency, Government Oversight, Women’s Rights, and on The Role of the Ombudsman. She also has an impressive list of publications on many of these topics.
“Ms. Brock received her Bachelor of Arts, specializing in Political Science and Economics, from McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec. She earned her Juris Doctor from the Osgoode Hall Law School, at York University, Toronto, Ontario; and her Master in Laws from Harvard University.
“She has been honored as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar [the first person ever awarded this honor from a UK Overseas Territory], a member of the Standing Committee on Judicial and Legal Services for Bermuda, a Corporate Board Member for Bermuda Electric Light Co., Ltd. and Butterfield Bank, and numerous other honored positions and distinctions.”
Regarding Ms. Brock joining the Commission, Mr. Richard Schuetz, the Commission’s newly appointed Executive Director said: “Chairman Dunch and the other members of the Casino Gaming Commission gave me clear instructions to assemble the best and the brightest individuals available to assist in the introduction of regulated casinos in Bermuda. Having Ms. Brock join our team abundantly indicates that we are on target with that goal.
“Ms. Brock will be an integral person in helping to make certain that our activities will operate at the highest standards of integrity and ethics, and to ensure that the casino experience will enhance the tourism profile of the Island, and increase investment and employment for the people of Bermuda.”
Ms. Brock said: “I look forward to working with the Commission and Commission staff to realize the goal of introducing casino gaming into Bermuda with the highest level of integrity and best practices.”
The Bermuda Casino Gaming Commission is comprised of Chairman Alan Dunch, Deputy Chairman Garry Madeiros, and members Ms. Judith Hall-Bean, Mr. Dennis Tucker, and Mr. Derek Ramm. The Commission is assigned the responsibility of executing the Gaming Act of 2014, designed to increase employment and investment through casino development.
WHEN?is target date 2020? why can’t we get the ball rolling with perhaps a lottery at the least?
This is good news for any of the naysayers about ‘the nuances of gaming’. Those who know or have worked with Ms. Brock will know that she will stand her ground as the gaming industry develops.

I’m happy to see some news about the Casino gaming. It seems that we got the green light on casinos and then yellow light. OBA give us an update, timelines etc.
By the time they make-up their minds about a casino – there will be no tourists left to visit as they will all be in Havana!!
