Court: Man Disqualified & Fined For Car Chase

March 1, 2016

Appearing in Magistrates Court this morning [March 1], a 50-year-old man was fined over $5,000 and disqualified from driving after pleading guilty to traffic offences stemming from a police chase last month.

Prinston Robinson was fined a total of $5,250 after pleading guilty to five traffic offences stemming from a police car chase through the back streets of Hamilton on 22nd February 2016.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo was told that the police drew up alongside a car being driven by Mr Robinson on Elliot Street. They noted that the TCD sticker was dated 2015 and sought to get Mr Robinson pull over, however he responded by speeding off with the police in hot pursuit.

The car chase led through Elliott, Angle, Union, Dundonald Streets, and Curving Avenue. It included Mr Robinson going the wrong way around a roundabout.

Mr Robinson told Magistrate Tokunbo that he eventually pulled over of his own accord, and also told the Magistrate that he was sorry for endangering the lives of others.

The Magistrate told Mr Robinson: “You are fifty. You behaved like a sixteen year-old.”

The Magistrate fined him a total $5,250 for offences including driving whilst disqualified; having no third party insurance; driving dangerously; having an unlicenced car; and failing to stop for police. Mr Robinson was also disqualified from driving all vehicles for three years.

After asking for time to pay the fines, the Magistrate ordered that Mr Robinson must pay $1,250 today but would have until 31st March to pay the remaining $4,000.
