Darrin Simons Named New Deputy Commissioner

November 22, 2018

Governor John Rankin has announced the appointment of Bermuda Police Service Superintendent Darrin Simons to be the new Deputy Commissioner of Police.

“Mr Simons has served in the Bermuda Police Service for 25 years and has worked in a variety of roles, rising to the rank of Superintendent in 2015. He will take up his position as Deputy Commissioner at the end of March 2019 after undertaking the College of Policing’s Strategic Command course in the UK,” the announcement said.

“The appointment was made following an open recruitment process in line with best practice. A strong group of seven senior Bermudian police officers were interviewed including Superintendent Na’imah Astwood, who was ranked as the second-placed candidate by the interview panel and who has accordingly been chosen to attend the Strategic Command course in the UK in 2020.”

Governor Rankin said, “I am confident that Superintendent Simons will serve Bermuda well as Deputy Commissioner of Police, bringing his wide range of skills and expertise to the role. There is strong leadership potential within the ranks of the Bermuda Police Service and I continue to welcome the development and commitment of its officers in their work for the community of Bermuda.”

Governor Rankin said…………… There is strong leadership potential within the ranks of the Bermuda Police Service and I continue to welcome the development and commitment of its officers in their work for the community of Bermuda.”

….yet you still brought in a British Cop at huge expenses to be C.O.P.

    • Whale watcher says:

The entire senior management team is now Bermudian outwith the COP and I predict he won’t be getting a second contract so what more do you want. He’s here to move the service through a period of real change and flux then hand the reigns over to a qualified Bermudian to take us forward.

      • eyes wide open says:

we had a Bermudian as COP with DeSilva and Smith, there was and is,as you just said and many know, qualified Bermudians,so don’t ask what more do I want!

    • Reply to eyes wide open says:

The newly appointed Mr Corbishly must have and had to be from outside. The issues within the BPS or soon to be BPF needs new people with back bone and no ties or alliances with local criminals. Then again we are talking about a country where a senior police officer suspended a young local cop on corruption and the race card was played by certain people. Watch and see. All will be reported soon

    • Question says:

The rest of us want the best person running the BPS wherever he is from. Not some halfa$$d suckup lackey who happens to be Bermudian.

    • Anbu says:

And once again for those who willingly choose to ignore it. The position WAS advertized and nobody stepped up. 3 qualified people could have but nobody wanted it. Next step? Foreign. Nothing wrong with it. Hes doing things. Unlike our government

  2. Tiff says:

Mark my words Supt. Astwood is the next Commissioner. She will be the BPS’s first female Commissioner. She is down to earth, highly skilled, wealth of knowledge and experience, voted best Senior Officer amongst the ranks. Bermuda would be blessed to have her as the future leader of BPS. I can’t wait. Congrats on this achievement Ma’am. Well Done!

  3. Proud Bermudian says:

Congratulations Darrin and all the best!

  4. gustav says:

    Hon. Lt. Col. D.A. Burch
would that not have been the better candidate ?
would make much things easier for our gov

  5. Common Sense says:

This is a very positive move for the Bermuda Police Service. I believe it is almost unheard of in Bermuda to appoint a Superintendent to Commissioner ahead of the two Assistant Commissioners, but it shows that the selection process was spread wider in order to select the best qualified person for the job.

It’s also noteworthy that Superintendent Na’imah Astwood, was ranked by the interview panel as the second-placed candidate and she has accordingly been chosen to attend the Strategic Command course in the UK in 2020.

Congratulations to Darrin Simons on his promotion, and congratulations to Na’imah Astwood for her recognition as a future potential very senior officer. We are making real progress.
