Photos: Peppercorn Ceremony In St. Georges

April 26, 2019

The annual Peppercorn Ceremony is taking place in St George’s on Wednesday [April 24], following a tradition that began over 200 years ago.

More than 60 soldiers of the Royal Bermuda Regiment were on parade. The troops and the RBR Band & Corps of Drums added to the spectacle as the Masonic Lodge of St George’s paid the annual rent for the State House – one peppercorn.

The State House was built in 1620 and is Bermuda’s oldest stone building. The landmark was used for the General Assembly of Bermuda until 1816, when the capital moved to Hamilton.

The Government of the day then rented the building for one peppercorn a year to Bermuda’s Masonic Lodge, an agreement which continues to this day.
