Last Call For 2022 Walk To Defeet Diabetes

March 16, 2022

A last call is being sounded for members of the public to sign up for this weekend’s Walk to ‘Defeet’ Diabetes which returns in its virtual format.

A spokesperson said, “The annual fundraiser, a collaboration between Lindo’s Group of Companies and the Bermuda Diabetes Association, aims to raise funds for the local organisation in their mission to combat Bermuda’s extraordinarily high rate of diabetes.

“Participants in this weekend’s event are asked to walk, jog or run in their own time along a planned route around St George’s. The 5k route will take entrants pass many of the island’s most picturesque spots, such as Gates Fort, Tobacco Bay and the Unfinished Church and should take most people less than an hour to complete.

“Those who donate or fundraise more than $100 will be entered into a prize draw for prizes including:

  • Dinner for Two at Ascots
  • Gift Certificates for Harbourfront
  • La Trattoria
  • Gift Baskets from BDA Spirits
  • John Barritt’s Hint Packages

“Those who raise over $250 will also be entered into a draw for an iPad 10.2, kindly donated by AF Smith

“Entrants will also receive other perks from local business in St George’s to recognise their donation to the Bermuda Diabetes Association:

  • Robertson’s Pharmacy- 5% discount storewide [except newspapers and magazines]
  • Wahoo’s – Enter for a chance to win a gift certificate

“Those who would like to take part can register online at RunSignUp.com here and entry is $20 per person. The first 500 participants will receive a goodie bag from BGA and an event tee shirt from Lindo’s.

“All funds raised will go towards the Bermuda Diabetes Association’s work. Education is a particular focus this year, ensuring that those with diabetes are fully empowered to manage their condition with an emphasis to ensure accessibility to support and diabetes education regardless of insurance status. There has been a dramatic increase in those now underinsured or uninsured and therefore an increase in funding necessary to make sure programs are accessible to everyone.

“While there might not be the same sense of community with a virtual event, participants are urged engage on social media instead. to showcase their participation and support the event by posting selfies at key points of their walk and posting them to their Facebook page here and engaging online.

  • Gates Fort
  • Virginia settlers’ plaque
  • Tobacco Bay
  • St George’s Golf Course
  • The Unfinished Church

Zach Moniz, Lindo’s Family Foods Manager, said: ‘We are proud to continue to support the Bermuda Diabetes Association in their incredibly important work in supporting those with diabetes and leading the way in prevention. As the spring flowers bloom and the weather warms, we think this is a wonderful activity the whole family can get involved with while supporting a good cause.’

Sara Bosch de Noya, Diabetes Educator, at the Bermuda Diabetes Association, said: ‘We are delighted to continue our partnership with Lindo’s for this year’s Walk to Defeet Diabetes and we remain incredibly grateful for their continued support.
