Kim Swan Relives Historic 1979 Golf Victory
Kim Swan is revisiting his historic 1979 victory that saw him lead Troy University to victory in the Northeast Louisiana Intercollegiate at Chenault Park Golf Course in Monroe, Louisiana.
A spokesperson said, “When Kim Swan led Troy University to victory in the Northeast Louisiana Intercollegiate at Chenault Park Golf Course in Monroe, Louisiana, very little was reported in Bermuda at that time.
“Thankfully, Troy University’s media relations team led by Gary Stogner ensured great coverage occurred and team performances were put in the public domain.
“Mr. Swan recalls his journey throughout the deep south of America golfing among the top amateur golfers in the 1970s that set the stage for him to win three collegiate individual titles, along with representing several winning teams for Troy University.”
Mr. Swan said, “Troy University coach Mike Griffin took a special interest in me in the spring of 1979; he taught me how to think my way around the golf course and believe in myself. Griff unleashed talent deep within me through sports psychology – he got inside my head in a good way.
“But my two years with the great Ken Green as my roommate and friend golfing in Palm Beach, Florida and around America prepared me to become a real force at Troy University in Alabama. We played with many of the great amateurs in the United States – Ken Green and his family made me part of their family, I love them for their inclusion and remain eternally grateful.”
The spokesperson said, “The 1979 Northeast Louisiana Intercollegiate at Chenault Park Golf Course saw Kim Swan shoot 68 – 69 [7 under par], which broke a school record set by the legendary Ronnie Mobley, Troy’s undisputed G.O.A.T., and Canadian Bernie Starchuck – both All Americans on National Championship Troy University teams. In addition, the team performed exceptionally and the Troy team won the tournament as well.”
Mr. Swan said, “I fondly remember Coach Griffin blasting a song by the Doobie Brothers – ‘What A Fool Believes’ – and the personal time he afforded me preparing at Troy on the putting green especially. He assigned our best putter, Billy ‘Bozo’ Meyers, to me help me on the greens in exchange for me helping him with his ball striking; the strategy paid huge dividends for us as a team.
“45 years later, it’s surreal to reflect on my journey and I give thanks for my life golfing all around the world.”
