‘The Life & Death of Captain Cook, Re-Explored’
To mark World Oceans Day, BUEI and the Bermuda National Trust will host author Hampton Sides on June 9 for a talk on Captain Cook’s legacy, based on his book ‘The Wide Wide Sea’.
A spokesperson said, “In celebration of World Oceans Day, Bermuda National Trust is collaborating with BUEI Talks to present an illustrated talk by author Hampton Sides on ‘The Life and Death of Captain Cook, Re-Explored’, based on his recent bestselling book The Wide Wide Sea. This special event starts at 6:00pm on Monday 9 June in the Tradewinds Auditorium at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute [BUEI].”
“Hampton Sides is an acclaimed American historian and journalist, and the author of several bestselling works of narrative history. The New York Times named The Wide Wide Sea one of the Ten Best Books of 2024, and Barack Obama featured it on in his coveted Summer Reading List. Reviewing the book for The Observer, author and actor Stephen Fry said, “It combines the satisfaction of a Patrick O’Brian blockbuster with the insights and revelations of a true historian. The Wide Wide Sea somehow told me more about the making of the modern world than any book I had read for ages.”
“Captain James Cook was arguably Britain’s greatest navigator, and his three ambitious voyages around the world were among the most consequential in world history. But his legacy has become controversial today, as island communities around the globe have begun to view the vaunted explorer as a symbol of colonialism and the tip of the imperial spear. The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook reassesses the eminent seafarer through a modern lens.
“With a vivid slideshow, Hampton Sides will narrate his own travels in documenting Cook’s epic final voyage around the world, while also deconstructing the complex circumstances that led to Cook’s dramatic death in Hawaii on 14 February 1779.
“Tickets can be purchased through BUEI.org/events or PTIX, $20 for BNT and BUEI members, $25 for non members, $10 for students. Books will be available for purchase and the author will sign copies after the talk.”
