Jessica Lewis delivered a superb performance at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Switzerland, racing to victory in the 100m race in 15.22 seconds — an all-time best for the Bermudian athlete and less than a fractional split second off the world record time of 15.20.

To provide a point of comparison, the gold medal winning time at the last Paralympics was 15.64 and the world record time is 15.20, so Lewis’ time of 15.22 is one of the fastest times ever recorded in the T53 100m, and she is currently the #1 ranked female T53 sprinter in the world.

She recorded a photo finish with the reigning world record holder Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland, while Turkey’s Hamide Dogangun finished third in a time of 15.90.

“15.22 in the 100m today!!!!!,” Lewis wrote on social media.

“Just outside of the World Record of 15.20! What an incredible race with Catherine Debrunner with the win coming down to 0.002 of a second!!

“Thank you for pushing me to get faster Catherine. You’re an incredible athlete and person. Seven races in Switzerland with seven personal best times. I am so proud of myself and grateful for the amazing coaches, support team, team-mates and sponsor [Arch Capital Group]. I have surrounding me that have kept believing in my potential with me.”
