Another Winter Athlete Dons Bermuda Shorts

March 18, 2010

Bermudians are no longer the only winter athletes to be noted for their Bermuda shorts after a top ranked European Olympic skier took to the slopes in Bermuda shorts.

Competing in his final race after a 20 year career, Marco Buechel decided he wanted to go out in style. Wearing a jacket and tie accompanied by Bermuda shorts, he entered his final race; the World Cup Super G Slalom finals in Germany.

Hardly skiing for the win, the Bermuda short wearing European recorded one of his slowest times after stopping to shake hands and chat with fans and officials during his final race.

Liechtenstein’s Marco Buechel participated in the Winter Olympics from 1992 to 2010, and numerous world championships. He has four World Cup race wins and a world championships silver medal.

Two Bermudian athletes, Patrick Singleton and Tucker Murphy, previously gained world attention for wearing Bermuda shorts at the Winter Olympic Games.

During the 2010 Winter Olympics, the popular social networking site Twitter was abuzz with e-talk of Tucker Murphy’s Bermuda shorts, with literally hundreds of tweets pouring in from around the world. Mr. Murphy also attracted the attention of Globe and Emmy nominated American actress Amy Brenneman with his shorts.

Luger Patrick Singleton was the first Bermudian to wear Bermuda shorts at the Winter Olympics. Mr. Singleton and his shorts were featured as a question on the game show ‘Jeopardy!’, and the Olympic Museum in Switzerland requested the shorts hang in their museum.
