Police Identify Murder Victim As Jonathan Dill

September 3, 2013

[Updated with video] The police have identified last night’s murder victim as 30-year-old Jonathan Dill, and said he leaves behind a wife and 7 year old daughter.

The shooting occurred at just past 10.20pm last night at a residence at the area of the Glebe Road and St Monica’s Mission junction. Mr Dill was found unresponsive outside of his residence, and taken to KEMH where he was pronounced dead.

Acting Superintendent Nicholas Pedro said, “The nature and method of this heinous crime lends evidence that this is a gang related event. As such, enhanced patrols will also include areas where there is the possibility for retaliation.

“The suspect is believed to have acted alone riding a motorcycle, and on leaving the scene of the crime, the suspect turned south on The Glebe Road towards Parsons Road, Friswells Hill, or Bishop Spencer Road – being other possible routes taken after leaving the residence.”

Area MP Walter Roban said, “I am deeply saddened for the family of the victim murdered last night and for our community in the Glebe Road/St. Monica’s area. This marks the second shooting in two weeks and residents of this area of have seen far too many tragedies like these in recent years.

“As the Parliamentary representative for this area, I stand with the residents and condemn this senseless act of violence.  On behalf of the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) our condolences go out to the family of the victim.

“As a people, we must remain vigilant and committed in our efforts to combat and eliminate violence in our community. These murders affect all of us.

“We appeal to anyone who may have witnessed  what happened to cooperate with the authorities in order to bring justice and closure for the victim, their family and loved ones,” concluded Mr Roban.

Any witnesses or anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the St. Monica’s Road, Glebe Road area around the time of this fatal shooting – particularly persons on a motorcycle riding through the area – should contact the Serious Crime Unit at 247-1739 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.

Update 12.32pm: Acting Superintendent Nicholas Pedro’s full statement is below.

At about 10:20pm on Monday 2nd September, 2013 several 911 calls were received relating to gun shots in The Glebe Road / St. Monica’s Road Pembroke area.

Officers responded to #31 The Glebe Road, where they found a 30 year old Pembroke male in an unresponsive state outside the residence, suffering from injuries believed to be from a gunshot wound.

The victim is Mr. Jonathan Dill of Pembroke Parish.

The family and friends of Mr. Dill have been assigned a Family Liaison Officer by the Bermuda Police Service to assist them during this difficult time.

Mr. Dill leaves behind a 7 year old daughter and a 25 year old wife, with other numerous family members to mourn his loss.

Detectives from the Bermuda Police Serious Crime Unit are investigating the matter. All available evidence is being reviewed, and several witnesses have already been interviewed.

Detectives will continue to work at the crime scene and the wider neighbourhood to canvass for more evidence and witnesses during the remainder of the day today, and our Community Action Team will also work with area residents to assist them during what is unfortunately a more common, but nonetheless troubling and traumatic experience.

The Bermuda Police Service will enhance its regular and armed patrols in this, and other neighbourhoods that are affected.

The nature and method of this heinous crime lends evidence that this is a gang related event. As such, enhanced patrols will also include areas where there is the possibility for retaliation.

A full complement of detectives will investigate this matter to bring the offenders to justice.

The suspect is believed to have acted alone riding a motorcycle, and on leaving the scene of the crime, the suspect turned south on The Glebe Road towards Parsons Road, Friswells Hill, or Bishop Spencer Road – being other possible routes taken after leaving the residence.

Further details on the suspect may be released at a later time.

I am appealing for anyone that saw this incident or can provide information that can assist in identifying and bringing the offender or offenders to justice, to contact detectives from the Serious Crime Unit.

The Serious Crime Unit can be contacted on 247-1739 & 247-1340 or alternatively anyone with any information regarding the murder of Mr. Jonathan Dill is urged to contact the confidential & independent Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-8477 (TIPS).

Update 4.25pm: In the wake the shooting death of Jonathan Dill, Governor George Fergusson and Senator Jeff Baron have both extended their sympathies to Mr Dill’s family, as well as called for anyone with information to come forward.

Governor Fergusson said, “I feel for the family of Mr. Dill and am deeply sad that they and his friends should suffer this shocking bereavement.

“I know that statements from public figures can only have a limited use on occasions like this. But I do appeal to the community around Mr. Dill and the wider community in Bermuda.

“First, to do everything possible to support the family – which I am confident will happen – and second to do all in its power to discourage any form of retaliation, if, as the police suggest, this awful murder may be gang-related.

“Bringing more misery to more families is a futile and wicked cycle. Anyone with the slightest ability to influence this should do their very best to prevent it. This won’t always be easy.

“It could mean speaking to a friend or family member at risk of getting caught up in the situation. Or it could, as others have repeated, mean contacting the Police or Crimestoppers.

“But if you can do something, I ask to you to do it – for the sake of those involved as well as for Bermuda as a whole,” concluded the Governor.

Junior Minister for Public Safety Senator Jeff Baron said, “This latest shooting has robbed another family of a husband and father, son and friend. In the wake of this tragedy our first thoughts are for the victim’s family and friends and supporting them in the coming days and weeks.

“This Government fully supports the Police in their plea for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and we encourage them to share any information that will assist the Police.

“For the wider community it is important that we allow the Police to do their job in investigating this crime so that justice can be properly served. At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Dill’s family, especially his wife and young daughter.”

US style Policegang tactics. Let one gang kill the other and hope you can make arrests with each murder. One crew dead the other in prison. Win/win for the police!

So when did all of this start again? Are you all so blind that you cannot see why and exactly when all of the shooting started back up again, there is an elephant in the room and its obvious now that it wont be stopped just ignored.

    • Concerned Citizen says:

I feel you Plato, it’s as if people are blind and cannot connect the dots. Btw, I noticed that the BPS are going to step up patrols………not where people are being targeted, nope…….but rather, they will patrol(keep safe) the area that they expect retaliation! This is a 5year pattern, that when the young men up the hill get shot dead, the police step up patrols(or protection) of the young men DOWN THE HILL. Well……..I can cannect the dots, and I’m not happy at all!

    • Condolences to the family and friends of this latest incident.

  14. Questions! says:

I just do not see how someone can be shot in this area with surveillance at every entry point on St. Monica Rd. and the police have no leads??.
There is a camera adjacent this residence that can see anyone moving between Pond Hill and North Shore. So tell me again, why no one was seen. I can only assume that the cameras do no work. Why, is it that there are approximately four cameras in this neighborhood and none in any part of middle town.
Any time there is a shooting involving their rival someone is immediately arrested or accused. However, when something happens to one of these 42 gentlemen no one is arrested as swiftly. I feel as if these man are being monitored to some extent instead of protected by these cameras.

I know that there has been talk over the years about the BPS protecting certain groups and I definitely agree with these thoughts.

    • E$ says:

put 2 n 2 togetha…. been dat way fa de longest

    • you are so right, none of the cameras are working not even in town, if my dam v80 with all my deceased son’s parts on it & my grandbabies bike seat on it the cameras are a big dam joke, the BPS protect who they want & thats sad.

  15. All Seeing Eye says:

If the murderer truly realized that karma is never defied, he would have realized that what he made others suffer in this life, he will have to suffer likewise – if not in this life, then in one after this one.

When Tupac bragged about killing thirty cops, this would indicate that he would be coming back thirty times to pay off his debt. Life for a life, is how reality works. Those who live by this life only, will be sorely surprised when the veil that was this life is lifted upon death, to reveal the next one in waiting.

  16. All Seeing Eye says:

If you murder someone in this life, you will be born all over again into another life after you die, and once you grow up over many years, you are eventually murdered usually in a likewise fashion – as universal recompense for all actions. Think about that before you go shooting someone. Do you think people really get away with such crimes?

Going to jail in this life does not atone for a murder either, you will still have to come back and pay it off in person.

If the world worked by the law of karma then crime and evil would vanish, logically. The problem is, that humans tend to not be logical, and tend to not want to believe in actual universal justice.

  21. cousin says:

My condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Dill, it is a sad situation. My prayer is that his family will justice and this murder will be solved. @ “See me no more” to have “lol” in your comment is very cruel it puts you in the same catagory as the perps, you think its funny idiot.

    • See me no more says:

I can put lol in my comment all I want cause it’s my comment and really I wasn’t directing my comment to no one in his family or no one else. I put lol cause as soon as someone get shot or dies it’s like Bermuda goes in a panic shock like they don’t expect this to happen in Bermuda cause of how small it is. One murder turns in2 more murders and it goes down to the younger generation and so on so wake up and that’s directed @ cousin…………R.I.P.

  22. MAKE MY DAY says:

Just when I thought that BDA had turned a corner!!! Once that “genie” is out-of-the-bottle….Then there is NO going back!!!

Gun murders are here to stay!!! At least it is NOT as bad as Chicago!!

  23. my deepest condolences to the whole family & friends of Mr. Dill its so sad. may God comfort you all @ this time & forever more, I watch Johnny & his brothers grow up & I am his brother Kofi godma. my heart aches for all of them especially his daughther & wife. ppl need to come forward, Bermuda will never be the same, OBA-PLP- BPS this island is finished. S.I.P Johnny.

  24. Bubbles says:

RIP Johnny. Such a tragic way to leave your family. Another family left to mourn. I pray your family finds comfort in the arms of the many families and friends that have lost family members in this war with no meaning.

To the culprits; have you really gained from all that you have done? What a sh***y bargain for the price of your soul! Dumb DUMBS!

This gangster appeal, is all an illusional a false sense of pride for these young men lacking self worth. Because the come from parents who made them feel worthless and unwanted. They found love in the streets from young men searching for the same longed for lost love! I understand; but will you continue stealing the lives of others? It won’t be long before your actions catch up to you…

How could you allow your judgment to be brainwashed into killing people who were once your friends. Overcome this Jealousy and envy.

EVERYONE WAS FRIENDS IN THE 90′S AND EARLY 2000′S! I know you miss those days killers! Everyone misses those days.

  25. Truth is killin' me... says:

I feel that this island has become frozen in fear with regards to these shootings. Nobody wants to say anything in case of retribution and or retaliation. I am all for Bermudianisation however I believe that in order for this island to go forward from this you need a POLICE FORCE that is immune from friends and family. Expat Police from the UK that have no links to this island NEED to be brought in for 5-10 years. Untill this is done give your sons and daughters a kiss everyday because one day they might not come home! This is Bermuda’s new reality!!!

    • Albert says:

Perhaps you will remember not too long ago everyone wanting ex-pat police officers to be replaced by Bermudian officers…. Sometimes you have to be careful what you ask for….

      • Impressive says:

this problem has nothing to do with the nationality of the police officers,, what next..

  26. Justmyopinion says:

My heart goes out to his daughter, wife and the entire Dill Family.
@ Bubbles I agree with you 110%. These are boys that were made to feel that way and found love in the streets. It’s so sad.
@ Truth is killin’me Yes bring in some type of Police Task Force but I think the UK ones are soft too. You need some of those American Gang Cops.

  27. Karma....by anonymous says:

KARMA is a B*tch….. Karma don’t sleep it lies in wait till its time to play catch up. And it always comes full circle.

When will this unnecessary injustice end….You are killing your OWN! Rebuke the DEVIL and call him what he is a LIAR. That’s exactly what your ‘boyz’ are (liars / cowards) that put you up to this.

It’s never too late to ask for forgiveness NOW. Be a REAL MAN and fess-up and pay your dues to society and the almighty! Or you may never get the chance, cause your turn may be up.

REAL TALK…Live by it, died by it! This is a public service announcement brought to you by SICK N TIRED OF THIS NEW BERMY GANGSTER SHYT!
