[Updated] A corroded pipe caused a flood at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital Saturday morning [Mar 8], impacting a number of areas, and while no services were closed and no evacuations were required, access to Emergency temporarily changed.

A BHB spokesperson, “A corroded pipe in the Gosling Ward area caused a flood at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital Saturday morning, impacting a number of areas, including Maternity and Emergency.

“Emergency patients were temporarily diverted from the usual Emergency entrance to use the ambulance entrance nearby while the clean up is completed.

“No services were closed due to the flood and no evacuations were required, although access to Emergency temporarily changed.

“Security personnel were available to direct people who need to access the hospital. The hospital would like to thank the Fire Service for their assistance, and recognise the hard work of the Facility and Housekeeping staff who have worked tirelessly to deal with the leak and clean the hospital so that it is safe for clinical care.”

Update: A Fire Service spokesperson said, “At approximately 11:50 am on Saturday March 8th the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a flooding at the King Edward Memorial Hospital.”

Sergeant Shannon Caisey said, “There were several offices affected by water damage on the lower levels. The offices had approximately ½ inch of water throughout.

“The cause of the flooding was a result of a burst water pipe on the 3rd floor which affected the 1st and 2nd floors. Fire Service along with KEMH personnel used portable water vacuums to remove the water from the affected areas.”
