Mr. Richard Dudley Spurling: For services to Bermuda.

Richard Spurling comes from a family where service to the community was always expected and upheld and service to the community of St. George’s and St. David’s has been part of his entire life. He became the fourth generation to represent St. George’s as a member of parliament and served in the House of Parliament from 1993 through 1998. During this time he also served on the Tourism Board and was the Government Whip.

Professionally he served the Bermuda community as a partner attorney for Appleby Global before his retirement in 2005. While in practice, he provided pro bono legal support for St. George’s and St. David’s residents who were unable to afford professional services. He was also a member of the BIBA Marketing committee [now Business Bermuda] for ten years, and he has been a Trustee of the Norah Nicholl scholarship fund since 1990.

In 1977 Mr. Spurling joined the Vestry of the St. Peter’s Church, and continues to serve on the Vestry and Friends of St. Peters where he recently led the 400th anniversary committee and helped redesignate St. Peter’s as “Her Majesty’s Chapel”. He is also a Life Trustee of the Bermuda Biological Station [BIOS]. He has also served as a member of the St. George’s Preservation Authority for many years, leading a charge to rehabilitate the ruins in St. George’s as well as numerous other projects.

Perhaps his most significant contribution to Bermudian society is his formation of the St. David’s Historical Society in 1998 with the late Joyce Hall. Mr. Spurling is a tireless champion of Bermuda especially the history and heritage of Bermuda’s colonial town, and maritime traditions. In 2013 the Bermuda National Trust awarded him the “Clipper Award” for contributions to and unwavering support of St. George’s and St. David’s.
