  1. Coffee says:

So when will the UBP/BDA/OBA do something about gun violence ? Here it is Friday night and people are really afraid to leave the house ! We shouldn’t be living like this . Thirty seven months as the government and the rate of shootings are at a five year high .

    • John says:

Still a lot lower than before, but scary still.

    • We the People (1st!!)e says:

      After the America’s Cup.

      • Harry Buttle says:

Or maybe when stupid people reel in their petty differences. What really is the government / BPS going to do? They play hardball, they’re called thugs, they investigate and research they’re called ineffective. It’s not the police or the government, it’s a system that hobbles authority while the bad guys take every advantage of the fact there’s little to no consequences to their actions.

Our rights and freedoms have come with a price.

    • The O.B.A will take extreme measures to deal with the gun violence, unfortunately when it is someone from the upper class white community that gets hurt or killed and not before.

BLACK LIVES DON”T MATTER TO THEM !

      • NANA says:

Three quarters of the Police Service are black. Stop the Black and White issue and help to make Bermuda a safe place.

      • hmmm says:

        Racist you are Duane !

      • TSOL says:

Black lives don’t seem to matter to alot of other blacks since there have been a constant stream of black on black shootings since 2008.

        • Onion Juice says:

That’s because the system of this society has socially conditioned their minds to think that, and it’s been in effect for a few centuries.

          • Ed Case says:

I know many Jewish people, and they don’t constantly moan about the ww2.

            • Onion Juice says:

You mean the same Jews who don’t acknowledge Ethiopian Jews as Jews, who are racist toward African Americans, who got 772 Million in Reparations from Germany.
              Oh ok.

    • Hair says:

When will children stop having children… That’s the issue!! not government’s fault..Grow up and take responsibility of your own… geesh!!

      • Nanny Pat says:

Or if you MUST have them, at least RAISE them!!

        • Onion Juice says:

Funny how people who have had the cards stacked in their favor for centuries have it all figured out to compare themselves with those whose families have been at a disadvantage for centuries, while the privileged children are sent overseas to hide their embarrassment, while the less fortunate are the spectacle of news.
You socially fortunate recipients won’t last a day in our shoes with the obstacles that we have faced and continue to face on a daily basis, but we are a resilient people, after traveling thousands of miles in a sub-human environment for months in filth and scourge coming across the Atlantc(after coming from a great Nation where we had pride, dignity and were a Mighty People), then have your name, family and culture stripped away from you, then be subjected to inhumane treatment ,rigorous hard FREE labor for centuries, only to be told that you’re free but you had to work in a system that paid you next to nothing and in fear off being killed or raped for no reason.
Now we’ve made a LITTLE progress, even though the oppressors have become MORE civil, their mindsets are still the same. Yes there are some people who have not taken advantage of the progress that has been made, but the SYSTEM is still rigged.
You can get a trailer park man or woman in the hicks, give them a make over, send them to Bermuda, and in no time they would run with the social circle that will help elevate their social status. And even though the privileged children F#%€ up too, what’s their excuse, but their sins are hush, hush and swept under the carpet and protected.
I agree there are a handful of brain damaged fools out there, but that’s not a reflection on us as a People, if you want to use that card, there are some things that the privileged do in your secret closets that are protected and giving the impression that the privileged don’t commit crime.
I know Bermuda is special where the privileged are squeaky clean and are infallible and law abiding, but anywhere else in the world they have a tendency to slip up and get exposed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
          Mmmmmm

      • We the People (1st!!)e says:

That is not the issue – it is not as simplistic as that. I’m sure we can go back generations and find ‘children’ having ‘children’ and this madness did not happen.

    • sebring says:

could it be party politics behind the scenes? it is very Bermudian to discredit one another?

    • Hmmm says:

Nobody is afraid to leave rheir house!!!!! Pathetic PLP merchant coffee apparently is, wonder why?

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

So who was in power when it was at its highest??? Politics is pointless to this, the issue is thug gangsters, no respect for life coming from no self respect, trying to put themselves on top by putting everyone down, and willing to put a bullet in anyone for even stupid slights. Their mom as know who they, but the moment another thugs get the better of them, then it’s he was a good boy… the fault doesn’t lie with the politicians, it lies with those that accept this in the community, that turn a blind eye when they know who and what. The only thing that is going to cure this is getting kids out of the culture of self destructive ambition, and in to the belief that they have the power to make things better, not worse.

    • Coffee2 says:

You forgot to say PLP to. All the shooting did start when they were in power. Shows you that no matter who is in power there’s still going to be shooting. And no party has a solution to end the violence.

      • yess says:

The government of the day is supposed to tackle crime. It’s really no way to spin that one.

        • jt says:

If they really took it by the neck the same people would
bit@$ about the harsh methods, profiling, etc.

    • Nailah says:

You sound so stupid. You need to stretch and broaden your brain space so that you realize that OBA has nothing to do these stupid children shooting each other.

    • Widget says:

@coffee. Your so dense I bet light bends right around you.

      • Coffee says:

I can remember a time about forty eight months ago , that whenever someone fired a gun on the island , any and all of the then opposition would get plenty of air time to flare their pretentious nostrils and rag on about the correlation between the sitting government and the gunman .
Why has the narrative changed ?

        • cat says:

until juries have 1/2 a brain between them what’s the point of catching these guys? no wonder the BPS moral is low. the BPS work hard and in most cases know who the culprits are but dumba** Bdians sit on a jury and all common sense flies out the window. SMDH

        • Duh says:

Because the serious crime rate has dropped considerably since the OBA won the election

          • Onion Juice says:

Everyone talk about crime, but who are the criminals.

            • Christopher James says:

I dunno but you will continue to moan and groan whatever the situation. It must be difficult being so angry all the time.

          • Onion Juice says:

Since U.B.P. We’re given the election, most of them where either dead, locked up or left the island, but if you want to take credit for that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • TJ says:

      @Coffee,

Everybody, such as yourself blames the Gov’t for everything don’t they? Whilst I am against violence, what do you expect Gov’t to do? Hold these individuals down and beat the living day lights out of them. People are responsible for their own actions, not Gov’t or anyone else. Gov’t can put laws in place to stop the violence, but if a person is stubborn and is going to do something they’re going to do it. Stop blaming Gov’t f for everything!! What these guys need to do is go and find a job and do something constructive with their lives and stop riding around thinking they’re all bad, shooting at people and being a menace to society.

    • Jus saying... says:

You are ta dumb! U sound like that guy who blames government for all the robberies. Dnt make excuses for the dumb fools.

    • Rasta says:

Cant even blame that on the government. People already have guns. Until them ones are located and destroyed you cant blame the government. How about all our brothers and sisters do something about the weapons on the island. Because people know. SO F#@$*!G SPEAK UP!!

      • hmmm says:

You ain’t a rat for calling it in to the secure hotline, you are a hero who saved somebodys life.

If you know anything about who has guns….then call it in !!!!! Save a life today !

When are we going to stop looking at government officials to stop certain issues and start looking at the individuals who choose to do what they do? Change starts with yourself.

    • Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

What makes you scared to go out at night..?? Is it your white oppressors or your black brothers..? After you answer that question intelligently i’ll give you a solution.

    • Unbelievable says:

“the rate of shootings are at a five year high” – now that is a bold faced lie.

    • Navin Pooty Tang Johnson says:

The OBA? how about having some of the hundred or so witnesses to the Court Street shooting ? they could do something about gun violence…..did you ever complain during the PLP time in office? did not think so…

  2. Marge says:

Can someone explain to me why are these guys shooting each other ?
I can only think that they are only lazy little bastards that do not want to get a job…and are shooting each other because they have no education…..and all they think about is making money illegally
How do we sove this problem ?

    • Suzi says:

      Hate!

    • arwf says:

It’s about hate, control and getting back at each other. Throw controlling the drug trade and other crime plus thinking it gives respect. Idiots idiots spoiling our home for the rest of us.

    • big shotta says:

Are you an a@#…loss and revenge…simple as that.

    • Maybe you need a real lesson on street life verses the real ill’s of society, but the answer to your question is very broad and can not be all said in such a open forum, the truth of the matter we continually deal with the fall out of what we see in our community, when the depth of this issue lies far beneath the surface of white empowerment.

When we get real about the issues that effect most, then we can get real about how or why so many loose guns are in our community. guns are not new on our streets as in the last 15 years, they have been on our streets a whole lot longer, we are only tasting the backlash of why they are now being used.

Before calling your own relatives bastards, or someone else’s please educate your damn self and make sure you understand that many of these young men come from a two parent home and a mother and who are married or were, so i take a offence at you calling them bastards.

I know that we can all get emotional when things happen like this, but these same young folk need to be reached and stopped before it is their turn for the barrel of the gun to be pointing at them.

So as they read your stupidity of comments, just how exactly do you think you are helping them, and I for one am not sticking up for them, but choose to take another approach in reaching them.

      • Franklin Jr says:

Perhaps things should be said in an open forum, working around the edges in secret obviously isn’t working

  3. B says:

Place is gone mad, They need to get a grip on this before innocent children or people get hit, these fools are just firing at will with no regards at all.

Why are they shooting at will ? What’s he done ?

I swear people press the “dislike” button because of its availability… Smh..

  12. Realist says:

    Dear Mr. Dunkley,

Here we go again, this is a great time to reduce the size of the Police Service. You are doing a great job keeping the moral of the officers low. While you are at it, take away their benifits. The police will definitely continue to put their lives at risk and fight this gun violence head-on knowing that they would have to pay if they get injuried.

Wow!!!! our country is a safe place. Arm robberies, gun play every day and unhappy police officers and more gun play tonight.

You send the police away so these gun thugs will play. Cut more police jobs our country would be safer.

    • Onion says:

Which Civil Servants would you like to lay off to pay for your plan?

      The government is going broke.

      • The Realist says:

Government can’t be broke If they offering payroll tax breaks to everybody. That was a huge revenue stream. Can be broke if they offering custom exemptions. So cut the pity party about government being broke.

        • Onion juice says:

And they can’t be that broke to spend $77million on a sail boat race and GIVING Hanbury $1000,00 a day with a $80,000 bogus bonus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Onion says:

Who has received a payroll tax exemption for a preexisting business?

All the exemptions have been given to new businesses/expansions to help them get off the ground.

        • Onion says:

Who has received a payroll tax exemption for a preexisting business?

All the exemptions have been given to new businesses/expansions to help them get off the ground.

      • sure. says:

so you would rather have the government spend money on the America’s cup for the benefit of a particular class of citizens? and cut the police force because we are going broke…lol

        Politics here is truly egotistical.

        • Nanny Pat says:

why not just let all the thugs kill each other off then we won’t need such a large police force and yes, then we can use money for things that generage business for the island. The thugs are hell-bent on killing each other anyway, let them at it! Give them an open field or the old army base.

    • wondering says:

No matter how many cops you have if they are all on permanent sick leave or permanent disciplinary leave getting high end 5 figures and 6 figure salaries then who cares of the operational strength of BPS.

Some are glad to bluff a job for 80,000 per annum.

Some didn’t sign up to be faced with gun crime.

Ask around as to how many will delay responding to a firearms incident hoping it has dissipated prior to their arrival.

      • Triangle Drifter says:

Would you hurry to a gunfight only armed with a stick & a taser?

      • fed up says:

The answer is absolutely none , how insulting to the men and women of the BPS , you must be referring to yourself as I can guarantee you wouldn’t run into danger

    • Sheila says:

You don’t need a bunch of police around doing nothing keep the real police who can retaliate when needed and whom are not afraid of these thugs give them what they are looking for

  13. live and maintain says:

    Pray for this island

  14. seriously!!!! says:

everybody talking about trying to find a solution to gun violence and trying to blame OBA. stop trying to hold OBA accountable and start holding their parents accountable for their child(ren) behavior. It starts at home! Parents need to stop turning a blind eye to the kids and stop being afraid to discipline your kids. Who cares if they grown you will always be their parent.

    • Coffee says:

Correct me if I’m wrong . One of the promises that the UBP/BDA/OBA made publicly , for all to hear and more importantly for all who could be persuaded to vote for them , was that if elected , the problem of gun violence would be eradicated . No one is blaming the UBP/BDA/OBA for gun violence , but we all must hold them accountable for what they promised to accomplish on your behalf , yes your behalf , and anybody who listened and voted for them …

Call the minister of national security , find out what he is doing to curb the violence …

      • James Rego says:

        @Coffee
What are you doing to help stop the violence?

Thus far all I see is a disgruntled political supporter throwing fuel on the fire, using this to score political points while friends and family go around killing each other. Shame on you!

I can’t imagine any political party wanting to take credit for this fall-out and loss of lives but that’s what you are doing. Pull down the OBA in hopes it will boost the PLP. Nothing ro do with helping to resolve this nightmare! Please help this island if you can, we / you deserve better.

        • drunken ursula says:

well James , I’ve never seen anything from you whilst the PLP was in power supporting every effort that was made trying to break the trend in crime have now…so please oba/ubp friends get over it ! James as long you have your say nobody else can have theirs????

      • smh stfu says:

Sooooo explain to me again how the OBA is going to stop gun violence….I’LL WAIT….that’s what I thought. They promised jobs and fell short there so please tell me what can they do about guns.Things happen and times change. Its terribly sad that this is what the island has come to but what can the OBA do if the BPS can’t even do anything. Everything is much easier said than done. Instead of pointing fingers just Pray for Bermuda and your loved ones.

        • Coffee says:

@James… The path that I take is a well worn path first beaten out by the supporters of the UBP/BDA/OBA many years ago … Blame the government for all the ills of society !

      • Zevon says:

Where does this myth come from that the “OBA promised to eradicate gun violence”?
        Frikin PLP liars again.

        • Coffee says:

I agree it is/was a myth when Micheal Dunkley was touting it as a fact while electioneering pre 2012 !
I think you need to have a serious talk with Micheal , let him know that you understand that he said what he had to say to achieve the confidence vote .

    • Sheila says:

Some parents really don’t know most have to work three and four jobs to survive in this country when we stop being so bias against certain topics and help each other we will stop loosing jobs and see change

  15. big shotta says:

Everyone keeps looking for someone to blame….everyone has to realize that blood has been shed and many have died…this is simply tit for tat…it is almost impossible to stop this kind of violence….basically the mind set is that “I’ve lost someone so you have to lose someone”… this isn’t about drugs, money or territory…it’s about loss and revenge….it doesn’t matter who the national security director is nor the premier nor what party is in power…there is almost nothing that anyone can do….the change has to be in the individual….and getting all these guys on the same page of stopping the violence is a farfetched fantasy…..there has been to much loss…and none of them are ever gonna feel compensated or even..it’s unrealistic to think that…because an individual has changed there life for the better..this does not weigh in on the next person who still seeks revenge or to avenge one of there friends or families death or injuries….once violence starts, it’s virtually impossible to stop until all parties involved are dead

  16. ratty says:

When I was coming up – Court St was out if bounds for me because of its stigma. I recall persons of faith at the parking lot between Court St Liquors and Spinning Wheel.

They preached and gave testimony and were relentless in their quest to try to “save” a lost soul.

I believe it worked and not on account of them praying but on account of their physical presence and their public outpuring of Love and the simple fact that they weren’t afraid to endanger their lives to advocate for the drug pushers and prostitutes that were on “the block”

  24. A Visitor says:

The real issue is jobs! Our young citizens cannot find employment due to foreign workers holding the majority of positions that our younger generation could possess. We should never employ a foreign worker to be a waiter, cook, salesperson, or cashier. Thsee are usually first time jobs for young workers. These types of jobs are a necessity in training young men and women the meaning of hard work. Providing them with a mentality to obtain more by working harder and setting goals. We have eliminated this mindset in our community, therefore creating a breeding ground for thugs, thots and dreamless kids.

    • asampson says:

So now its time to blame foreign workers?????

I doubt that anytime soon any of these ‘future CEO’s’ are going to work at an entry level job.
Foreign workers are here doing the jobs that locals don’t want to do. But yeah, I guess it’s their fault……that’ll fix the problem.

    • Nanny Pat says:

What are you smoking??? How many of these good-for-nothing thugs do you see lining up with their CVs for a waiter/cook/salesperson/cashier position? If you truly believe that then you are just as much of an idiot.

  25. Crazy says:

So ppl are shooting a three min walk away from the police headquarters on foot with cameras and they got away? Interesting…

  26. cassie says:

@Crazy – you mean less than a 3 min walk away from our Police Headquarters. Then again, do we really think these guys care about that? Heck, drug transactions are taking place in plain view day and night just steps away from the Police Headquarters. Are the police REALLY that blind or dumb? Would be interesting to find out if the cameras located on that street are even functioning.

  27. Crazy says:

If ppl are comfortable enough to open fire right down the street from the police station, the police station in which is the biggest and most expensive building on that whole street, can one reasonably assume that the solution to the problem is “more police” and more money? I mean the bigger police “presence” movement would have a leg to stand on if the police cleaned up the area where they undoubtedly have the biggest “presence”, but have they? How can the bps make the citizens of Bermuda feel safe if they can’t even patrol outside of their front door? Makes you wonder…

  28. Joey-Bag-O'doughnuts says:

I think the Bermuda government and BPS has got weed out those that are allowing the importation of guns and ammo. Have the radar on all crafts coming into Bermuda waters and such.

There is no reason these punk, gangsta wannabes should be frightening the people.

  29. Being Real says:

Look when will people realize that scum will be scum it’s not a race issuie this is rat issuie , The PLP or the OBA cannot successfully do away with scum , that’s like asking them to kill Satan . Evil will Always be a part of society, the only way to defeat evil is to continue to raise our children and teach our children to avoid evils pitfalls. We have had some serious murders and attempted murders and those who are responsible are still among us. They are on that bike that passed you , the car that was behind you , on that bus that you was on .
The only way this will truly end is when those who are responsible are either locked up for a long time or dead. However I have faith that the police is doing one hell of a job catching these guys but I’m not stupid enough to think that they can stop every incident.
    Peace will come soon

I must say I’m the least bit impressed with how my generations of peers are going on today… 23 yr old female, if I’m supposed to marry someone on this island, how can I if they’re all killing each other… It’s sad to hear of them shooting at each other and the like. Why? Because you live two parishes in the wrong direction (according to “gang territory)? It’s already a harsh ratio of more women to men, all across the world, but why must we continue the killings of our men? Why can’t we band together like the people of America & protest that the violence stop!? Although they do it because it’s the police often, we should be walking through neighborhoods as they walk the streets to let these young men know “All Lives Matter” not just black. It’s only 23 days into 2016 and look at all the crazy s#it that’s happened… Unbelievable! Some will blame the political parties, others will blame the parents, but of course it all goes back to the individual persons. No one can force you to go out & just shoot..you do it on your own terms. Psychology/sociology would say these folk are a product of their environment.. True, but it should not be. Employment, or lack there of, should not be a reason to go out and shoot someone. Drugs and gangs are overrated.. They need to be disband. We’re only so big, we should be uniting not fighting, gosh were all more than likely related. Why God put us on this small island..and these young people are “doing the most”. 9 parishes… Not 50 states… Too small for all the fuss!!!! Those blaming government, stop regardless of what the oba have promised.. Those blaming parents, STOP . Most.. Most parents do the best they can. After that, it’s the person who has to make their own choices. I lost two cousins last year, one to a gun one to a knife.. I’ll never see them again, one will never see his child. It’s so SAD! But I know their parents did their best in raising them.. What they did outside of the raising was on them, but I’ll love them regardless of it (been the saying is you die how you live). Just saying, the only people to blame are those doing it. Us as a community need to come together and help stop what we can. Walk through neighborhoods, take our young neighbors to church.. Cause that’s all they need. A little Jesus. Lastly, the education system needs to ensure that EVERY school public and private are being taught BERMUDA HISTORY not American history. Teach them about us FIRST so we can have a sense of pride about ourselves as bermudians than maybe we wouldn’t want to kill one another!!!

the motive for shooting does not lie with who is the government of the day, ask those already incarcerated. ” I shot so and so because he was/is a member of the ***** party. I cant feed my family so I shot so and so. If a person needed groceries, I would help.If we continue at the rate we have seen in the past three days, then a more uniformed presence will be seen and felt on every street corner. If I am correct, the (junior) Minister for Public Safety, Mr Jeff Baron served with A United Nations Peace-keeping Corps a few years ago, and saw first-hand the challenges. For now tho, we need to encourage those tasked with maintaining public order, and really. our leaders should have appeared on national tv by now, and stepped onto the streets and meet the people, all politicians.

And the biggest joke of all is church folks are out blaming the demise of marriage on same sex partners lol the straight folks out their are not doing so good and what’s with all these wild children they are breeding no respect no manners they are total reflections of their parents smh boy don’t make me roar go along Ignore your own back yard and blame the rest of the world .

Whether you people think it’s OBAs fault or PLPs fault your wrong. It’s the own people’s fault. We don’t speak up enough, and when we do its always about the wrong things. Both parties promise things, and at the end of the day it doesn’t matter who is in power.

courts, parents, church, boy scouts, school, sports clubs, poli ticians, what-ever activity that will shape and encourage posi tive contribution to life is excellent. At the end of the day, after all has been said and done —its up to the individual. Even the criminal element have certain expectations that they dont want situations happening with their people. For real, they want a nice neighborhood, too.
