Accident: Bus & 80-Yr-Old Car Driver

At approximately 11:30am yesterday [June 5] there was a road traffic collision at the junction of Middle Road and Tee Street in Devonshire involving a bus and a car. The car driver, an 80 year lady, the bus driver and passengers were not seriously injured.

The Police say that it appears that the bus was traveling in a westerly direction on Middle Road and the car was traveling north on Tee Street when the two vehicles collided at the junction.

The driver of the car, an 80 year old Southampton woman, was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for lower back pain, with her injury is not considered serious.

The driver of the bus, a 52 year old Devonshire man, was not injured, as were none of the bus passengers. The car was extensively damaged while the bus received front end damage.

    I’m sure I’ll be unpopular for saying this, but you know you’ve thought it too – those older – as in too old – drivers are frightening and unsafe. It may not have been the fault of the 80-yr old driver but i wouldn’t be surprised to hear it was. I don’t mean to be age-ist – I’m just observing that as we age it’s a fact that our reflexes and vision and motor skills are not what they were, and a several ton car in teh hands of someone who can’t handle it the way they used to is not a vehicle – it’s a weapon!

      Oh, I don’t know. I can imagine the bus driver sailing along in that self-assured “they had better get out of my way”, fashion that drivers of large vehicles have then BLAM!
