Video Previews: Weekend Film Series

November 15, 2010

A French romantic comedy and an anti-nuclear documentary are the featured films at the ‘Weekend Film Series’ on Sunday November 21.

The documentary, Countdown to Zero, screens at 3 p.m. while Heartbreaker – a smash hit at the French box office with more than three million admissions – will screen at 5.15 p.m. Tickets, $15, are on sale now in the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI.

Just when you thought that the end of the Cold War signified the end of the nuclear threat along comes Countdown to Zero to tell us that the threat has never been greater. With nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities and others racing to join them, the world is held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a single accident. Hailed by critics as “exhilarating….a remarkably beautiful movie” (Wall Street Journal), and “extraordinary powerful…you should see this movie…you should see it again” (Huffington Post), Countdown to Zero seeks to mobilise public opinion by making a compelling argument about the necessity for nuclear disarmament.

“Dovetailing nicely with the BUEI’s focus on preservation, the film will appeal to environmentalists, social activists – and anyone who cares about the future of our planet,” says Duncan Hall, the programming director of the Weekend Film Series.

Heartbreaker is an action-packed romantic comedy pairing two of France’s biggest young stars: Romain Duris (The Beat That My Heart Skipped, Paris) and actress/singer Vanessa Paradis (Girl on the Bridge).

Charming, funny and effortlessly cool, Alex (Duris) is a professional heartbreaker who for a fee can turn any husband, fiancé or boyfriend into an ex. Alex has one ironclad rule: He only breaks up couples where the woman is unhappy. His latest job will put that rule to the test. The target is Juliette, a beautiful heiress who is set to marry the man of her dreams. With ten days until the wedding, Alex has been hired by her father to carry out his most daring seduction yet that risks him being caught by his ruthless personal creditors, angry exes, and the beautiful and independent Juliette herself. But worst of all, will he discover to his own cost that when it comes to love, the perfect plan doesn’t exist?

The ‘Weekend Film Series’, held monthly, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.
