Teen Bailed: Gun Possession Charges

January 23, 2012

[Updated] This morning [Jan.23] in Magistrates Court, 18-year-old Dameko Dublin was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon [firearm] and possession of ammunition. He received bail in the amount of $25,000.

A police spokesperson said Mr Dublin was wanted by police in connection with the recovery of an illegal firearm in Devonshire in November 2011, and was arrested at 2:20am on Saturday [Jan.21] in Sandys Parish.

“The arrest relates to the recovery of a firearm and arrest of two men on 5th November 2011, on North Shore Road, Devonshire in possession of the firearm in question,” said a police spokesperson.

“Officers from the Bermuda Police Serious Crime Unit have been investigating this matter, and Mr. Dublin marks the second person charged in relation to this firearm.”

The Crown Prosecutor asked that Mr Dublin be remanded into custody. However, Senior Magistrate Archie Warner ruled that bail would be granted and that Mr Dublin must re-appear on 6th February.

The Magistrate set bail at $25,000 with one like Surety and ordered that Mr Dublin report daily, between 9:00am and 6:00pm, to Hamilton Police Station.

I would be curious as to the justification for allowing this fellow out on bail and I’m wondering if he was issued an electronic device to track his movements.

  2. Still Trying to get it Right says:

Interesting how this young man received bail and the other young man alleged to have been in possession of the same gun, remanded in custody…..

The things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmm!

  3. Dazzle says:

The other two guys WERE allegedly actually in possession of the fire arm when they were arrested… He was arrested in connection with the recovery of that fire arm… He was not present when the other two guys were arrested last November.

    • Confused says:

It appears that you know a lot about this incident.

      • Dazzle says:

No more than anyone else who READ the article and related posts.

        • tricks are for kids..... says:

Regardless of what the OTHER articles might say this one clearly states “18-year-old Dameko Dublin was CHARGED with possession of a prohibited weapon [firearm] and possession of ammunition” (with CHARGED being the operative word). So yes, one has the right to wonder WHY he was released on bail on a gun charge?…if HIS is to be a lesser charge since he wasn’t actually caught “red handed” than maybe it should read differently but as the article goes on to state,”Mr. Dublin marks the SECOND PERSON CHARgED in relation to this firearm.”

So yeah why is one in and the other out?

        • Still Trying to get it Right says:

DAZZLE – here’s the first reported article, as posted by BERNEWS….so your claim that the initial suspects WERE allegedly actually in possession of the fire arm when they were arrested is GROSSLY inaccurate…..

Considering this suspect was not mentioned as being present on November 5th, it can only leave a strong assumption that the prosecutions case is built on DNA…..

Notwithstanding, there are simply some cases where the “charged person” should not be bailed. My personal opinion is that “gun related crime” should not be applicable for bail.

The Bermuda Police have arrested two men in connection with a recovered gun, the eleventh seized this year.

A Police spokesman said that at about 2:30am on Saturday [Nov. 5], officers were on uniform patrol in the vicinity of the former Clayhouse Inn, located on North Shore Road in Devonshire Parish.

At that time police officers observed two men near a parked motor vehicle. On seeing the officers the two men attempted to avoid police by driving off on a motorcycle resulting in a brief pursuit.

They were stopped and detained a short distance away.

The Police spokesman said a search of the immediate area by the officers resulted in the recovery of a firearm containing ammunition.

As a result the suspects, two 18-year-old men, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

Details on the weapon will not be released at this time.

The seizure of this firearm marks the eleventh firearm seized by the Bermuda Police Service in 2011.

“The targeting of gangs, guns, violence and illegal drugs remains the priority of the Bermuda Police Service.,” said the spokesman “The firearm will be conveyed overseas for forensic and ballistic testing.”

Investigations are ongoing and being progressed by members of the Serious Crime Unit.

Anyone who has any information about this incident is asked to contact detectives at the Serious Crime Unit at 247-1340 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-TIPS [8477].

To clear this up a bit…..the gun was actually found a short distance away from the suspects on November 5th. NO ONE was in actual possession of it when police found it……Go back and review the facts. Albeit the individuals are being charged for possession, the gun and ammo were not in their “physical” possession at the time of the police finding it.

    Off to Britain for him.

  5. Bermy's Finest says:

Agree!! Like they say on CSI which im sure everyone watches. Let the evidence do the talking!! Yes, its sad that our young black males are doing crimes, but dont throw the book at every male just because.

        • Rick Rock says:

He is accused of having a gun and ammunition. The prosecutor wanted him remanded, for obvious reasons.

He had no legal representation at all. Yet the magistrate let him out.

It’s no wonder this country is in a mess.

  6. Just saying says:

Guns dont kill people!! People kill People!! They are just making it easier to get away with crime!! Cowardly actions!!

  7. What Next?2012 says:

  10. Crystal-clear says:

@Bob the Builder! Actually, guns DO kill people when in the hands of IDIOTS! Until the case goes to court, he should have been remanded into custody since he was charged with possession of a gun and ammunition! Who’s to say this same idiot, when out on bail, won’t shoot someone. Hope it’s not YOUR family member or a friend!
