Jessica Lewis Qualifies For Paralympic 100M

June 6, 2012

Bermuda’s Jessica Lewis will now represent the island in both the 100m and 200m at the upcoming 2012 Paralympic Games, after reaching the qualifying standard in the 100m last night [June 5] at a meet at York University in Toronto.

The 19-year-old — who previously qualified in the 200m — competed in the Mixed 100 Meter Wheelchair Open finishing 3rd in a time of 18.95, which qualifies her to enter the Paralympic 100m.

She also competed in the 400m, where she finished 3rd in a time of 1:10.61. In both races Ms Lewis was the top female finisher, with Isaiah Christopher and Michael Kahn claiming the top two spots in both races.

After she qualified in the 200m last month Ms Lewis said she hoped to also qualify in the 100m, and was very close at that time having clocked a 19.13, just a shade off the qualifying mark of 19.00.

The 2012 Summer Paralympic Games will take place in London between 29 August and 9 September, following after the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Ms Lewis’ participation in the Games will mark the first time Bermuda will be represented in track and field at Paralympic level.
