Sloop Foundation Receives $25,000 Donation

September 13, 2012

As part of their commitment to serving the communities in which they operate, Marsh and Guy Carpenter today [Sept 13] announced a $25,000 donation to the Bermuda Sloop Foundation.

Twenty Marsh and Guy Carpenter colleagues have also donated their time this month to take part in two voyages on the sail training vessel Spirit of Bermuda with children from various middle schools in Bermuda.

On each voyage, 10 volunteers from Marsh and Guy Carpenter and 10 students are learning to sail together while encouraging teamwork, mentoring, and personal and professional development. Marsh, a global leader in insurance broking and risk management, and Guy Carpenter, the leading global risk and reinsurance specialist, are operating companies of Marsh & McLennan Companies.

“We are committed to giving back to the local community not only with financial donations, but also with our time,” said David Ezekiel, Bermuda Chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies and Chairman of Marsh’s Bermuda Charity Committee.

“We were particularly inspired to work with the Bermuda Sloop Foundation because of the opportunity to interact one-on-one with young Bermudians for a character-building experience that’s set in such a dynamic learning environment.”

The voyages begin each day with basic sail training by Spirit of Bermuda crew. In the afternoon, the students and volunteers from Marsh and Guy Carpenter take over the sailing duties as they guide the vessel around the Great Sound.

As the students work alongside their mentors they will be taught leadership and collaboration skills as well as responsibility and initiative. The Marsh and Guy Carpenter mentors also participate in teaching students about Bermuda’s fascinating maritime history.

“We are so grateful to Marsh and Guy Carpenter for their generous donation and to the employees who are giving their time to engage directly with the young people of this island in activities that will enrich the lives of everyone involved,” said Denise Riviere, Executive Director, Bermuda Sloop Foundation.

According to the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, sail training instills a number of important lessons in a way that onshore classrooms cannot replicate. It fosters self-discovery of individual talents and empowers young Bermudians to be productive citizens by encouraging teamwork, self-confidence, responsibility, accountability, pride, courage and resilience while exposing them to Bermuda’s maritime history.

Voyages with Marsh and Guy Carpenter volunteers and local students are taking place on September 13 and 14.
