Police Release Latest Vehicle Collision Stats

The Bermuda Police Service released the latest figures on collisions in Bermuda through July 2013, showing there have been 1,045 accidents so far in 2013 – 84 less than the same period in 2012.

175 of those accidents happened in July, compared to 177 in July 2012. There were no fatalities recorded in July, with a total of 5 so far this year, equalling the 5 fatalities seen to this point last year.

While the majority of all accidents resulted in vehicular damage only, 468 of them caused injury to the driver and/or passengers; in all, 557 people have been injured in Bermudian road accidents through July of this year, compared to 586 through July 2012. Of 2013’s injuries, 85 were considered “serious,” a significant increase from 69 last year.

The causes of this year’s accidents reflect those seen last year very closely, with bad road surfaces accounting for 74 accidents in 2013 (71 in 2012), 63 attributed to entering main roads carelessly (67), 106 due to following too closely (94), 299 due to inattention (349), 102 blamed on inexperienced drivers (126), and a further 72 attributed to vehicles improperly overtaking others on the road (69).

Of the 1,045 accidents so far this year, 89 involved a citation by police for failing to stop (97 in 2012), 58 have required police to administer first aid (72), 20 have involved pedal bikes (22), 22 involved pedestrians (27), 24 involved children (25), and 10 involved animals (5).

In 2013, 52 of these accidents have resulted in an arrest for impairment, compared to 46 through the same period in 2012.

The numbers telling the story of the types of vehicles show the majority attributed to private vehicles (133), followed by motorcycles and scooters (80, trucks (26), livery cycles (24), auxiliary cycles (16), public service vehicles (9), taxis (6), and pedal bicycles (2).

The demographics of people involved in accidents in July of 2013 show this year has seen road accidents involving 2 people 15 years of age and younger, 45 people 16 to 20 years old, 58 people 21 to 30 years old, 61 people 31 to 40 years old, 45 people 41 to 50 years old, 61 people 51 to 60 years old, and 29 people 66 and older.

In total for 2013, there have been 713 females involved in accidents and 1,116 males.

Monthly statistics for the period from July 2012 through July 2013 show that accidents continue to occur fairly evenly throughout the year for locals, while accidents involving tourists generally spike during the spring, summer, and autumn; in fact, there were a total of only 14 accidents involving tourists between November 2012 and March 2013.

Of all accidents involving tourists, two have resulted in a fatality over the past 12 months, with one death occurring in July 2012 and the other in August 2012. Serious injuries for tourists in accidents have been almost less common, with a total of 18 over the period of July 2012 through July 2013..

For locals, an average of about 50 accidents have occurred each month during the year, with 10 resulting in fatalities over the past 12 months; that figure spiked in January 2012 with 4 deaths. Serious injuries occurred fairly evenly each month.

    I wonder how many of these were real accidents i.e. due to mechanical failure beyond the control of the driver, or crashes i.e. caused by driver error such as distraction?
