18 Year Old Admits Stealing Two Backpacks

October 3, 2013

Yesterday [Oct 2] in Magistrates Court, 18-year-old Dante Durham pleaded guilty to stealing two backpacks each of which contained cash and a cellphone.

The backpacks, said to contain less than $1,000, were stolen from two men who were running a Summer Day Camp for children and who were both swimming in the waters of Admiralty House in Pembroke during August 2013.

Durham’s activity was seen by children and others and the action was reported to Police. After he was arrested, Durham admitted the thefts and all the items were recovered.

Initially, Durham was unrepresented but hetook the advice offered by the Senior Magistrate and sought the free help available from Duty Counsel who later referred to Durham’s youth, said he had a clean record, and that this was not his normal behavior and was an impulsive act.

Durham read out a letter of apology in which, in part, he said that he was sorry and that his action had been stupid, mischievous, and childish.

The Senior Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report and set the matter for sentencing for November. Durham was granted $2,000 bail with one surety.

Is there any chance that this young man can be given community service in the form of addressing other young people (at schools, say) to talk about what he did, what motivated him and what he has learned and committed to change in himself?

do you really think that will work/

take your head out of the sand, this little brat needs a cut ass!

      • Kim Smith says:

I am not sure that it will work, no, but I do know that respect is a powerful thing and so I’ll put my money there for sure!

        • Nuffin but da Truth says:

It will work…it worked very well in the past!

        • Beyond2 says:

Most of these young people today have little to no respect for themselves let alone anybody else. At the age of 18, if he has not been given the basic fundamentals of life from home, he may never get them. Not to sound so negative, but that is the reality for alot of our young people. Government needs to address the social ills of this country in order to gain the upper hand on our youth, before we lose our country altogether.

Parents should be in the Dock with their off spring when these kids get caught breaking the laws.
