Bermuda Maritime Operations Safety Reminder

May 5, 2015

The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre has reminded all owners of 406 MHz Emergency Beacons of the need to have beacons correctly programmed and registered with the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre.

A spokesperson said, “On Monday 4th May 2015 the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received an Emergency Alert from an unregistered 406 MHz Beacon.

“BMOC would like to remind all owners of 406 MHz Emergency Beacons [EPIRBs – Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons; ELTs – Emergency Locator Transmitters; and PLBs – Personal Locator Beacons] of the need to have beacons correctly programmed and registered with the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre [RCC Bermuda].

“This will allow Search & Rescue authorities to quickly identify and aid persons in Distress. All beacon registrations can be conducted on line via the following website www.marops.bm with further guidance also available from the Duty Officer at the Maritime Operations Centre.

“Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre would also like to highlight the fact that a ‘Cell phone’ is not regarded as a proper substitute for a ‘VHF Radio’ and should only be used as a second layer of communications.

“All boaters are reminded of the need to carry a VHF Radio when operating seaward of the following areas: Narrows Channel; South Channel; Western Boat Channel and the outer reef between Pompano Beacon and Spit Buoy.

“The Bermuda Water Safety Council will host a ‘Boat Safety Seminar’ at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club on Sunday 17th May from 1-4.30 pm., where a hands on demonstration of VHF Radios and 406 MHz Emergency Beacons will take place. See www.wsc.bm for registration details. ”
