PLP Pleased There Will Be No School Closures

June 16, 2016

Shadow Education Minister Lovitta Foggo said the PLP is “pleased” there will be no school closures in the upcoming school year, and said the PLP “support the relocation of some preschools to a primary school campus setting” as “in many instances it provides a cost benefit to the government, whilst also ensuring a smoother transition to the primary school for students.”

Yesterday, Minister of Education Wayne Scott confirmed that no schools will be closed saying “I believe that the priority is not to close schools at this time, but changes are needed in order to provide a better service for our children.”

The Minister said the direction moving forward will begin around 5 areas which included developing a strategic plan, ensure that all primary schools are equipped with holistic programmes and services, improve the exterior and interior of all school buildings and relocate preschools to primary schools where feasible.

The Minister’s statement follows after the SCORE report said that closing Gilbert Institute, Prospect Primary School, St. David’s Primary School and Heron Bay Primary School were among the possible scenarios of school reorganisation.

Ms. Foggo said, “We are pleased to know that there will be no school closures by the OBA government in the upcoming school year. At this late stage, there would clearly be chaos had they decided to pursue the rumored school closings for this September.”

“We support the relocation of some preschools to a primary school campus setting. This was a PLP governmental initiative. In many instances it provides a cost benefit to the government, whilst also ensuring a smoother transition to the primary school for students.

“We support the intent to ensure that all primary schools have a thriving music, art, and physical education component. Education must develop every aspect of the child. Building the diverse talents of our students in all facets is paramount.

“At this time, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our teachers, staff, parents and students for their dedication, support and commitment to public education over this past school year. All have been challenged with performing in less than ideal circumstances, in spite of being expected to operate at an optimum.

“The next Progressive Labour Party government will be committed to returning public education to be the first choice in Bermuda. Education will be our priority, as our future economic growth and stability requires a well educated workforce.”
