Court: Two Men Charged With Burglary Offences

October 29, 2018

[Updated] 42-year-old Jahni Thompson and 33-year-old Jeron Douglas appeared in Magistrates Court today [Oct 29] in relation to a series of burglaries across the island.

Douglas was bailed and is due to appear in Drug Court, while Thompson was remanded to Westgate and also will appear in Drug Court.

Police Commissioner Stephen Corbishley said, “Burglary is one of the most traumatic crimes that can affect a victim and their family. The intrusion into someone’s home violates their feelings of personal safety and the loss of property can include items that are irreplaceable for personal and sentimental reasons.

“Offenders who carry out these crimes will be relentlessly pursued by the BPS and the public should be reassured that we work extremely hard to target those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Update written by Don Burgess: Both Jahnia Thompson and Jeron Douglas were sent to Drug Treatment Court after both pled guilty to separate theft offences.

Mr Douglas, 33 of Hamilton Parish, pled guilty to stealing a bottle of Hennessey worth $84.90 from Henry’s Pantry in Southampton and stealing money off the wall from the Swizzle Inn in Hamilton Parish.

He went to the Swizzle just before closing time and asked for a glass of water and later took three bills off the wall. Mr Douglas also admitted to coming back after it was closed and throwing a chair through a window and taking more money off the wall and ceiling.

He asked to be enrolled in the drug treatment programme because he is “looking for a better path and so I can be a better father to my son and daughter.”

Mr Douglas was released on $1,000 bail for one offence and $500 with like surety for the second. He will also be fitted with an electronic monitoring device and must observe a curfew from 7 pm to 7 am.

Mr Thompson, 42, was charged with breaking into a Smith’s Parish home in October 2018, and stealing $22,700 worth of goods, the majority of the value being a Rolex watch which was estimated to be worth some $20,000.

Goods that were taken and recovered from that home include an Xbox, controllers and games, an iMac hard drive, speakers, an iPad Air and travel case along with a backpack. He also pled guilty to stealing a Bose speaker from a different Smiths parish home on the same date.

Mr Thompson pled guilty to trespassing in a Warwick apartment on October 26 and stealing some jewellery, including two silver Tiffany & Co chains.

On that same date, he was caught with tools for use in the course of the burglary. Mr Thompson pled guilty to that as well prowling at a different Warwick residence and to stealing $20 in coins and a $50 necklace.

Mr Thompson told the court, “I would like to re-enter [drug treatment] so… that my drug addiction can be addressed. I’ve been using drugs since I was 13 and I’m really tired of this lifestyle.”

Mr Thompson could not be released on bail as the last available electronic monitoring device was given to Mr Douglas.

Both men are expected to be in Drug Treatment Court on Tuesday, October 30 to have their cases heard there.
