Minister Burch Attends BZS Youth Conference
Earlier this week Minister of Public Works Lt/Col David Burch, accompanied by the Acting Director of Parks Stephen Tucker, attended the final day of the two-day Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] biennial Environmental Youth Conference held at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo.
The theme for this year’s conference was “The Importance of Preserving Open Space”. Through this conference, the BZS set out to educate approximately 80 M3-S4 students and teachers on important environmental issues and show them that they can have valuable input into what goes on in Bermuda.
Minister Burch said, “I am encouraged by the work the BZS has done to engage and encourage the youth in Bermuda in the areas of ecotourism, agriculture, park planning and other important areas. It is important to show students that they have a stake in the future of Bermuda, and that it is truly in their hands.”
During the visit Minister Burch observed the students working in groups on their plans for Southlands Park, following which the six groups each in turn presented their ideas.
The Minister commended the students for their insight, enthusiasm and thoughtfulness on the proposals for Southlands. And he encouraged them to take personal responsibility for their environment and country and to encourage their friends and families to do the same.
Acting Director Tucker commended the students for their very innovative ideas and promised to share them with the Parks team as they develop a management plan for Southlands.
Minister Burch concluded, “Special thanks must be given to Dr. Jamie Bacon Education Officer of the Bermuda Zoological Society, teachers and volunteers who led the two day conference. As well a huge thanks to the Stempel Foundation for sponsoring the conference.”
