Branwen Smith-King Named Chef De Mission

The Bermuda Olympic Association [BOA] has named Branwen Smith-King Bermuda’s Chef de Mission for the upcoming Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.

“Branwen Smith‐King is the Executive Director of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation since 2017, and oversees all aspects of the Foundation’s programme and its mission to provide sail training for Bermuda’s youth on Spirit of Bermuda to empower youth to realise their potential through sail training and experiential learning,” the BOA said.

“She joined the Sloop Foundation after a 35-year career in Athletics, including at Tufts University where she served as Head Women’s Track & Field/Cross‐Country Coach and Assistant Director of Athletics. Branwen has also held several NCAA Committee sport leadership positions during her career which helped establish programmatic and policy protocols for its membership.

“Branwen grew up in Bermuda and represented the island in Track and Field at Pan Am, Commonwealth and the CARIFTA Games, including the first CARIFTA Games [Barbados 1972] where she won gold in shot put. She later attended Springfield College in Massachusetts and LSU for undergraduate and graduate studies. In addition to her work with the Sloop Foundation, Branwen serves as an Athletic Trainer for several of Bermuda’s national sports teams.”

The Pan American Games are the world’s third largest international sporting festival [surpassed only by the Olympics and the Asian Games]. The XVIII Pan American Games will run from 26 July to 11 August, and will host 7,000 athletes from 41 nations competing in over 400 events across 39 sports. Bermuda has competed in all Pan Am [summer] Games since 1967, taking home a total of 9 medals. The BOA will officially name Bermuda’s team in June.
