Ministry Of Labour 2022 Year End Review

January 8, 2023

Committed to implementing a $16.40 minimum wage, provided a total of $350,000 in scholarships, published a position paper on the challenges of an ageing population, and established a dedicated Project Management Office were some of the items listed in the Ministry of Economy and Labour’s 2022 Year End Review.

Minister of Economy and Labour Jason Hayward said, “Aiming to build a better economy for all, the Ministry of Economy and Labour continues working tirelessly to secure Bermuda’s economic success.

“By implementing effective policy solutions, we support families in need, protect those in the workplace, provide opportunities for Bermudians to find gainful employment, and increase economic activity through local and international strategies. In short, the Ministry focuses on promoting jobs, protecting Bermudians, and responding to the economy’s needs.”

All sounds very promising, except the message is from a Minister who needs to justify his job. Most of what he is saying are initiatives and proposals. If Government would just stop getting into things they shouldn’t such as vertical farming and fish processing, Bermuda might grow. Despite this, when will the Southampton Princess renovations start? When will the hotel reopen? Silence from the Premier after he took personal responsibility for the deal, opposed by the then Minister of Finance.

“Aiming to build a better economy for all, the Ministry of Economy and Labour continues working tirelessly to secure Bermuda’s economic success.”

In pursuit of that aim, you might want to take a course or two on macro and micro economics so you are not doing the opposite of what you claim you are doing.
