“The UK is committed to working in partnership with Bermuda and we remain available to discuss new proposals on this legislation,” the British Parliamentary Under-Secretary said when asked about decriminalisation of possession of cannabis in Bermuda.

During a recent session in the British Parliament,  Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell asked, “To ask the Minister of State, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, whether he has had recent discussions with his counterpart in Bermuda on the decriminalisation of possession of cannabis in that territory.”

In reply, David Rutley Assistant Whip [HM Treasury], Parliamentary Under-Secretary [Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office] said, “The UK is committed to working in partnership with Bermuda and we remain available to discuss new proposals on this legislation, to find a way forward that works for Bermuda whilst also remaining within the scope of existing international obligations.”

In September 2023, Bermuda’s UK appointed Governor declined to provide assent to the Cannabis Licensing Bill, which in effect, blocked Bermuda’s ability to implement the legislation which passed in the House of Assembly.

It’s a “little late” for what? Honouring the agreements we have made?

As far as I know, Bermuda is still governed by laws, not maniacs like Donald Trump or Boris Johnson who refuse to abide by agreements they have made when it does not suit their interests.
