Recently, the Government of Bermuda and the Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] jointly hosted a Long Service Awards Ceremony honouring more than 200 public officers for their combined hundreds of years of dedicated service.
A Government spokesperson said, “On hand to present the awards to dozens of public officers who have served 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and an impressive 40 and 45 years of service were Premier David Burt, Head of the Public Service Cherie Whitter and President of the Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU], Mr. Armell Thomas.
“Als on hand were Government Ministers, Senators, Members of Parliament as well as various Ministry Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Departments.
“One of the more poignant moments of the event took place when Georgette Bailey and Laverne Smith [both pictured] received standing ovations from an appreciative audience for their 45-years of dedicated service.”
Premier Burt said, “As we reflect on the years of service each officer has given, we are reminded of the countless ways they have positively impacted the lives of our citizens. The work they do has made a difference in the lives of all Bermudians and has helped to shape our island’s progress.
“These officers’ longevity is a testament to the resilience, passion, and commitment they have in making Bermuda a better place. This commitment is not only appreciated but also serves as an example to the next generation of public officers. The Government is thankful for their many years of loyal service and I look forward to the work that we will continue to do for our island.”
The spokesperson said, “From healthcare to education; from public administration to public transportation; from works and engineering to preserving Bermuda’s natural environment and resources; government workers were honoured not just their length of service, but the quality and passion with which they have served the public.”
Ms. Whitter expressed her gratitude, stating, “We are incredibly grateful to these officers who have dedicated themselves to career growth and professional development within the public service. Their long tenure is a testament to the positive and rewarding experience we strive to provide. We remain committed to nurturing talent and supporting career progression.”
And Mr. Thomas noted, “We celebrate the remarkable service the honourees have provided to the Government and our broader community. In a world where the pace of change is rapid and the demands on public service workers are ever evolving, their continued commitment stands as a beacon of excellence. Their years of service are deeply appreciated, not only by the Government but by the BPSU and the many lives positively impacted by the work they do.”
The spokesperson said, “As part of the Long Service Ceremony, awardees received a range of gifts, including a certificate and plaque honouring their service, as well as gift vouchers.
“The last awards ceremony was held in 2019, and was suspended in 2020, due to the pandemic. However, organisers confirmed that the Long Service Awards will resume on an annual basis with the next ceremony taking place in 2025.”
