The St. David’s Islanders and Native Community announced the Bermuda Powwow will be held on June 7–8 in St David’s.

A spokesperson said, “The St. David’s Islanders and Native Community is thrilled to announce the dates for the Bi-Annual Bermuda Powwow 2025, taking place on June 7 and 8 at the Lords, St. David’s County Cricket Club. Gates will open at noon, with activities running from 2 PM to 6 PM each day.”

“This year’s Powwow promises to be a vibrant celebration of Bermuda’s deep-rooted connections with Native American communities from the U.S. East Coast, particularly New England.”

Terlena Murphy, Chairman of the St. David’s Islanders and Native Community, stated, “The Powwow serves as a platform to honour these ties and foster cultural pride.”

The spokesperson said, “Following a successful return in 2023, this year’s event will focus on themes of healing, remembrance, and cultural celebration. A special Libation Ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 7, providing an opportunity for community members to honour their loved ones who have passed.

“Attendees will enjoy a rich array of traditional Eastern Woodlands song, dance, and drumming. The Warwick Gombeys will sponsor the drum circle, featuring the Wicozani, alongside the talented Mashpee Wampanoag Drummers.

“Additionally, the Wampanoag Nation Singers & Dancers will present interactive performances representing the Aquinnah, Mashpee, and Herring Pond communities. The Warwick Gombeys will also showcase the Indigenous influences in Bermudian tradition, adding a unique local flavour to the event.

“Gold Point Archery will return for an engaging archery demonstration, and various local vendors will offer delicious food and artisan crafts, enhancing the overall experience.

“The Powwow is more than just a cultural event; it is a living declaration of identity and resilience. Established in 2002, the St. David’s Islanders and Native Community is dedicated to preserving and promoting the unique heritage of St. David’s Island.

“For over 350 years, Bermuda has maintained enduring ties with Native communities across the Atlantic, particularly from the Northeastern United States. The legacy of ancestors who were brought to Bermuda during the 17th century endures through oral history, cultural practices, and family lineage.

“We encourage everyone to attend, regardless of Native American descent.”

“The Powwow offers a welcoming space for education, reflection, and cross-cultural understanding. It is a unique opportunity to learn about traditional customs, ancestral connections, and the often-overlooked history of Indigenous enslavement in Bermuda. These histories are inseparable from our island’s past and continue to shape its present,” Murphy emphasised.

The spokesperson said, “Join us as we honour our ancestors, celebrate our culture, and come together in the spirit of unity and shared heritage.

“Save the Dates: June 7 & 8, 2025. We hope to see you there for this extraordinary cultural experience!”
