I was looking forward to hearing this new trio at the famous Henry VIII, known for its comprehensive menu of tasty signature appetizers, main courses, sushi, and desserts. The dynamite sushi dish I ordered was absolutely worth the trip to 69 South Shore Road in Southampton and the songs chosen by band leader Stefan Furbert [drums], Wency Woolridge [bass], and recent Saltus graduate Kijali Jean-Marie [piano], were perfect.

I salute the two veterans for including the young Kijali, who has a very promising future in the arts. As a shining light, he knew many of the standards and his presence was critical to the live music scene standing a chance of growing, because we know it has aged.

This Soul New band delighted the patrons with a symphony of songs one after the other, which added to the ambiance of the evening. They added a few subtle touches to the melody of each song before allowing each musician to solo. At various points, the band was smooth, soulful, edgy, and rough without losing focus. They were clearly enjoying their performance and the attention received from many of us delighted to have a live band. My favourites included:

  • Jamming: Bob Marley
  • Blue Bossa: Kenny Dorham
  • The Girl From Ipanema: Antonio Carlos Jobin [with roots in blues, African rhythmic rituals, and European harmony]
  • Ain’t No Sunshine: Bill Withers described as “sumptuous”…a solitary man with a heart driven to connect to the world; the everyman of soul.”
  • Mr. Magic: Grover Washington Jr remains a hit since its release in 1975, even without a saxophone.
  • Winelight: 1980. Also a Grover song with a lasting touch that musicians love to play and remains a favourite.

The trio will be at Henry’s Friday evenings from 7.00pm to 10.00pm. Reservations are recommended, but not compulsory. Manager Subuthf DeSilva is excellent in meeting your needs and has a very perceptive and hardworking group of support staff who will ensure you have a delightful evening that will last a long time.
